Why didn't the guys visit Duddits? (Spoilers)

I didn't read the book, but I have watched the movie a couple times. I must have missed the part, though, where they explained why everybody lost touch with Duddits. It just seemed that they hadn't seen him for a long time when they picked him up at his mother's house. In fact, didn't she have to explain to them that he had cancer? It didn't make any sense to me. (The whole movie didn't make a lot of sense do me, but I liked it a lot.)

You're right, it had been a good long while since they had last seen Duddits (it's not explained exactly just how long in the movie and I forget if King explains how long it's been in the book). It's been a while since I've read the book, but I believe in the book (as well as in the movie) at least Henry and Jonesy were planning on visiting Duddits and all four of them in general had been thinking about him a lot lately. Henry and Jonesy never went to go visit Duddits due to Jonesy being hit by that car. My guess is that had Jonesy not been hit by that car that he and Henry would have gone to visit Duddits, but in a way Duddits orchestrated Jonesy being hit by that car as a way to further prepare his four friends for what they would encounter 6 months later when going to the cabin (Hole-in-the-Wall was the name they had given it) that they vacation in each year.

Personally, I enjoyed the movie up until the very end. I'm a HUGE Stephen King fan so I was greatly disappointed in the ending of the movie. The way it ends in the book (in terms of the twist with Duddits) is NOT how it ends in the book. I actually read the book for a second time before the movie came out to refresh my memory on what had happened in the story and felt like I was watching one of those campy B horror movies once the ending arrived.
