Another example of low ratings because of book readers

Too many examples here on imdb, it's getting to me to the point that book readers of movies should be banned of voting.

reply

Nope, not because of book readers, but because the movie wasn't great. I saw it ten years ago and had a good impression but was yound. I re-watched it recently and it's a pretty bad movie.

reply

What's bad about it? Just watched it, seen some real bad movies recently. This wasn't one of them.

reply

Maybe if you read more books, you could form a coherent sentence.

reply

Read the book, saw the movie, watching it again. Problem with Steven King books is generally they are very difficult to bring to film......but especially this one with Mr. Gray. When reading the book I couldn't imagine how they would pull that off and if you didn't read the book you had to be confused even with that little bit in the beginning. Same with the creatures. Still I thought the movie wasn't all that bad/good.

This movie rocks!!

reply

Well, the book sucks. I read it, and it was excruciating. The movie is just a dumbed down version of the book, so it's even worse. Don't get me wrong; I love Stephen King and a lot of his books, but this one is a swing and a miss.

reply

It's not because of book readers. It's because it wasn't a good movie. Sure, book readers aren't going to like something that highly deviates from the plot, but that's not what makes it a bad movie, or gets it bad reviews. Look at The Shining - Kubrick gutted that plot, he just took the basic plot and did what he wanted with it, but it was a fantastic movie, and people loved it (and rated it highly!) because it was actually good. Dreamcatcher took the rough idea of King's novel but took away everything that gave it meaning and heart and replaced it with a cheap alien subplot. The problem is not that they changed the ending and book readers hate it, but rather that they changed the ending and turned it into complete *beep* If they changed it (or just simplified it for the movie, the book ending is way too complicated to explain in a film) in a quality way, book readers and general viewers would have enjoyed it, and thus it would have higher ratings.

reply

Again you showed the fact that bookreaders are comparing in their minds. No doubt all the bookreaders have their points, but nonetheless it's still affecting the movie rating too much. It's just not objective as when you come with a totally open mind watching the movie and then rating it.

reply

Not really. This movie just is not very good. Not the worst ever but I think the rating is about right.

Additionally this is one of King's lowest rated books so it's not like it's some beloved novel where rabid fans are rushing the board to take down the movie. I don't know how you can possibly determine that the low rating here is because of book people...?

At any rate, IMDB ratings don't really mean squat so what are you so worked up about that you want to ban people from voting? One could argue that people who think s h ! t movies are great should be banned from voting. lol Makes no sense.

Dick, I am VERY disappointed.

It was just a crap movie, I really hoped people were wrong saw it on netflix with 2 stars . But Timothy oliphant, Morgan pfreeman, Thomas Jane etc plus a Steven king novel etc. but it started well and got stupid

Beaver dying cause he needed that toothpick was ridiculous

Thomas Janes weird British alien wtf??

One alien with a master plan to infect the world all the others stand around the ship waiting to be shot down

25 years fighting them, but all they had to do was land by water and drop in some worms

Also nobody ever noticed any of this for 25 years cause I guess the aliens always picked remote places to land

Duddits, where to begin, he is from an advanced civilization, presumably the same race as Mr. Grey but decides to live on earth as a retarded child? He knows about the plot to take over the earth but does nothing for 25 years then turns into a whalburg and gets leukemia??

Oh but he did give them a few cool powers like being able to point the way to civilization to the invading aliens nice

None of the animals infected by the worms could have possibly escaped and got to a water supply either?

The real army who took 30 seconds to arrive and take over from blue squad

Finally the whole ending, look the alien is about to put a worm in the drinking water, let's stop and have a nice chat, then try and take out a chopper and stand in the line of fire. Let's just hope that the alien is having difficulty opening that man hole cover eh?

So to sum up, great actors, good premise 4 buddies get powers to save the world etc but it dies for me with Beavers death.

Duddits..."then turns into a whalburg and gets leukemia??" ROTFLMAO! Best character description/review ever. Love it!

reply

I have not the read this book and I did not like this movie.

reply

i don't think it's cause of just the book readers, sometimes it doesn't bother me when certain things get changed, i've never read this whole book so i dunno how it ends to be fair. but the film i guess i am one of the rare ones who honestly loved it. i don't love all his films, adapt pupil is easily one of the worst films ever made. but this one i liked in fact i may start reading this one tonight!

reply

I never read the book but I'm guessing that those who are saying the movie sucks are expressing that it very much does suck whether you read the book or not. The book itself was either too boring to really catch their attention or the fact that the movie opted to omit certain things such as significant events, characters, or general information that effectively develop the characters and establish interesting back stories that will provide more understanding that would have made a more intriguing movie. These omitions may have caused a depreciation of value within the movie itself, therefore causing it to... Suck.

book readers should absolutely be included in the voting. i want to kknow if it didnt live up to it, and why. i like their votes. bunch of idiots would be making it a 10 otherwise

reply

Haven't read the book and have no interest in doing so. Loved this movie. Rated it 8/10. So I guess by your standards I'm a semi-idiot? But I really think you mean an "ignoramus" when you use the word idiot here. And I also think you're confusing intelligence with personal taste. But, whatever. I got my PhD so I'm not worried about whether I'm intelligent or not. I think I'm at least at an acceptable level.

You can do some reading at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiot if you feel like checking out the actual definitions...

Yeah! Thank god we don't have more people voting in ways we don't agree with! What a world that would be to live in!

I loved the book and the movie. I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea though. Most of King's horror movie adaptions have a similar feeling, that I think many find a little hokey. This one, It, Rose Madder and The Stand, all I enjoyed but can see why others may not. These are my comfort movies, I watch them probably once a year when I can't sleep.

Most of his non horror comes across the screen much differently, such as The Body, Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption. I enjoy all those as well, but I think they also appeal to a broader group of people then the horror ones I listed.

I think it's sometimes better to change his movies storylines a little more to make it work. Many of his horror books are very long to try and fit into a few hours. (or even 4) I enjoyed both the book and movie of the Shining. However they were very different from each other.
