Probably just so that Damian Lewis could have a bit of fun using his real accent. I too laughed at all he said. It was the facial expression he put on as that "character" too lol.

"I'm just a f_cked up girl looking for my own peace of mind; Don't assign me yours."

Because Brits (as one myself) seem, in the eyes of Hollywood, to make ideal villains.

A few notable examples...

Sean Bean as Alec Trevelyan
Ben Kingsley as Fagin
Jeremy Irons as Simon Gruber
Gary Oldman as Norman Stansfield
Edward Fox as the Jackal
Douglas Bradley as Pinhead
David Bowie as King of the Goblins
Christopher Lee as Scaramanga
Terence Stamp as Zod
Steven Berkoff as Victor Maitland
Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin
Ian McKellen as Magneto
Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter

If ignorance is bliss, then I'm in heaven now

I'd like to add to that list:

Tom Hiddleston as Loki

Because the British are just plain terrifying and always have been. Why else would Paul Revere ride on his horse yelling, "The British Are Coming!" They were the Godzilla of colonial times.

reply

The British accent was the face palm moment for me, and it just went downhill from there.

I think it helped tell the difference between the alien and what's his name + he could use his real accent.

reply

Damian also has one of the best American accents out there. All through Band of Brothers I thought he was American.

reply

I agree...I'm picky about accents, but he's really one of the few who consistently pulls it off. I can't remember ever hearing a slip, which is really impressive.

reply

He sounded like 3-CPO.

reply

Well, I can't speak to that (positive or negative...?), I was referring to his American accent, which is quite good. I'll leave it to Brits to comment on the British side of things, but Lewis is from London, so I assume it is authentic.

reply

Huh! Tell me 'bout it. 

Show too much kindness, people won’t fear you. If they don’t fear you, they don’t follow you.

reply

Maybe Daniel Day Lewis was first choice for the producers!

It's that man again!!

Why is it ridiculous that the alien sounded English?

What accent would have made more sense? American? Why?

Aliens can sound like whoever they want. Most likely it adopted the more traditional way of speaking English, perhaps it needs to update its language data base.
