He was where he was at because:

1) He had committed suicide ~ yet, he still had chances to redeem himself & he kept failing.

2) He rejected belief in G (one of those 'chances' that he flunked).

3) Ego: the theme regarding his ego/arrogance is throughout the story, sometimes overtly presented and sometimes hinted at (such as his continually ignoring Mr. Jefferson aka Sinbad).
