Chamane (1996)
Ostrov (2006)

And maybe:

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005)
Into the Wild (2007)
The Mission (1986)

Otra conquista, La (1998)

Thank you too.

Another one I just saw was Dogville. Again its not extremely similar, but theres a point in the movie where I was absolutely amazed.

I found this movie in Kenneth Turan's great book "Never Coming to a Theater Near You." It's a great collection of reviews of movies that are really really good but not popular. I'd highly recommend the book to anyone who enjoyed this movie.

Check out "Yeelen." It also deals with revenge and the supernatural, but in an African setting.

The White Dawn (1974)
Dersu Uzala (1975)

--thematically different from Atanarjuat (cultural encounters/clashes) but with similar settings, esp. The White Dawn, which was filmed in the NWT with Inuit amateur actors. Both very good in their own ways.
