Vanished from Five (UK)?

I missed this show when it originally aired on Five USA, so, as a fan of The Mentalist, I was pleased to see that they started showing the first season from the beginning on terrestrial (Channel) Five, giving me another chance. Well, we got up to episode 6, I believe, two or three weeks back, and now there is no sign of it. I can see in the Radio Times that Five USA are still showing The Guardian, but there's no indication of whether that is season 1, 2 or 3, or how far into whatever season it is. Does anyone know if Five are ever going to continue screening the first season from where they left off? I wrote to them to ask, but they are currently ignoring me...

reply

I know - how annoying was that ...

I have actually seen all the episodes on Five USA, and they are currently mid way through season 3 on that channel - last time they got to the end of season 3, they started the whole run again from the beginning of season 1 right through - don't know if they will be doing that again though....

Thank you so much for the info, still a mystery why it's vanished from Five on a Saturday night though...

reply

It was getting viewers of nearly 1 million on a Saturday evening on Five so seems a bit mysterious that they just dumped it. But that is Five's want. They've done it with other shows and show episodes of L&O CI out of sequence.

reply

Just a quick post to thank everyone for taking the time to reply to my original message! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled and keep checking the TV listings.

Hi all. You're welcome. I'm glad I could help. Happy watching!

And it has now disappeared from Five USA to be replaced by one of the worst american series ever - Medical Investigation. Utter garbage.

Some of my friends and I did email them when it vanished off fiveusa as well, and were given stock response of ratings, that the show had been shown through a couple of times, etc, etc, and then they put some medical tripe on ... go figure!

reply

It had certainly been shown twice before, but why start it again, show half the first series and then bump it off. Stupid. But typical Five USA.

To add insult to injury Five kept running "The Guardian at 6 pm" ad four or five days after! Stopping a series in mid-run is inexcusable contempt for your audience, but par for the course in today's cutthroat environment.

The sad reality is a cancelled series about social services in the States was always likely to have the same reception here. People just don't want to watch them. That's why we get glossy pap like Medical Investigations which I can't seem to get past a quarter of an hour. Even The Guardian had a certain glossiness to it and the obligatory plinkety-plonk piano as emotional shorthand. But at least it was a rare attempt to make something for grown-ups.

I so agree with you.

I completely agree with you about Medical Investigation!

I think though, I have to defend Five here. I started watching the Guardian April/May time when they first started showing it and they have showed all 3 seasons on a loop since then. I'm sure they are just taking a break and will show it again in the future.

I'll keep an eye out for you.

Medical Investigation is complete rubbish. They could have picked something better to replace our Nick with!!

It's not so much they took it off, but why start a series and then suddenly break it off. Seems a bit stupid. And for all the US shows that there are, surely there must be something better than Medical Investigation. Even Ironside is better. And that's bad.

There's a group on Facebook where people are discussing this at the moment:

If lots of people contact FIVE with emails and phone calls, maybe they'll reconsider:

It's worth a try. People find these shows at different times. If they know there is still an audience maybe they'll give it another go sooner.

I call it the Amnesty International method. Bombard them with letters/emails/phone calls etc. If it worked to free Nelson Mandela, it might work to get the Bakerboy back on FIVE ;-)

Lol! Good luck - I hope it works!! :o)

wicked - wonder how long for this time!

reply

Well let's hope they start to show the whole blasted thing, I am going to have to Sky + it just in case even if I have Season 1 on DVD now, because knowing what the muppets at FIVE are like, they might show it all in the wrong order...

reply

Well I watched it the first time it was on 5 USA but now it's on Sony TV or Men & Movies.
