Alvin and Laurie both know-nothing do gooders (spoilers)

We got to watch this show on Netflix. We enjoyed it very much even though it got to be a turgid novella experience at times.
There were threads woven into episodes that were or were not ever taken up again.
A recurring character would just disappear, for instance, or a significant event was not ever mentioned again in other episodes.
But what annoyed me about the characters was the actions that Alvin and Laura took with regard to James Mooney and his nephew, Levi. James was giving Levi, who was in his custody at the time, lessons in boxing in a boxing gym in a boxing ring. This was a learn by doing experience and both characters could end up with makeup for bruises. No actors really got hurt.
The two ultra know-it-alls took extreme exception and reported the 'abuse' to authorities. They completely flipped out over the-to them- inappropriateness of the lessons, which often left Levi and James with facial bruises.
James had custodial guardianship of his nephew during his probation and was determined to help the boy to better himself. He wanted to keep him out of the 'system' that the do-gooders' interference made certain he was dumped into after their report.
It seems James opted for the boxing lessons when his nephew violated a term of his probation-he had skipped school. James thought he could get a better result for Levi by involving him in a sport that he excelled in as a youth.
The probation violation was revealed during the hearing Alvin and Laurie instigated and he was taken from James and sent to a Juvenile residential facility.
While in the first center he was attacked by unknown assailants--gang bangers out to get him for quitting the gang. He was kicked out of that center when he wouldn't tell who the attackers were.
He next went to a privately run facility, and there he was killed.
Laurie and Alvin were horrified, and I am certain that in the real world we could all lay Levi's death at their feet because of their interference.
The next spoiler would involve James Mooney, but I think this was enough for now.
