I'd like to buy this on dvd....

... as I LOVED the show when it originally aired. However, as it's taken such a long time to actually come out on dvd, when I but it I want to make sure that I get a good copy and not one with episodes missing or whatever. Has anyone bought a good copy that they'd be willing to recommend? I found this: http://www.tvdvdwarehouse.com/product.php?productid=38640 which looks quite good, but again, I don't want to spend money only to have a crappy copy.

If anyone has any information I would so appreciate it!

I bough them some time ago. If what you want is to re-watch the episodes go buy them. However, if quality counts, bear in mind they are copy of videocassettes. Some are better than others, but I wouldn't give 5 stars to that product. The good thing is they are region free, so wherever you live, they work.
However, I would strongly suggest you go to Amazon.com and buy the first season. THe quality is totally different. I'm dubbing the episodes now, because they're on Italian tv, but I'm afraid I'm too busy and I just do not have the time to make other copies.
If you do not live in America and your DVD is not region free, google it's model number followed by 'hack' and you'll find instructions on how to make it region free.
Or, go to side-reel. THey don't have all the episodes, but they come free and look quite good on the computer.

Watch them all here:

I'm all for buying the DVDs and I own Season 1 but one can't be expected to wait to be of pension age to see the rest....

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I think I would rather go for quality but it does suck that only season 1 is out (as in a good copy). I might have to resort to watching it online; usually I don't like to do that but as Esofagus said, we can't sit around waiting forever for the other two seasons to be released.

Thanks again!

Totally agree with the quality issue, also I often like to have subtitles on (not available on S01 Boxset anyway) because of the different accent (I'm used to British English, but English is not my first language anyway).

The quality of the files linked there is ok though but I actually got mine using torrent - someone made a torrent out of the ENTIRE 3 SEASONS, it took me about 2 weeks to download the blasted file as it's 23GB but it was worth it. It's very easy if you use a client like Vuze.

Alternatively about £10 or €10 will buy you a month's premium subscription to Megavideo and that allows you to very easily DOWNLOAD the episodes I linked. It's as easy as clicking 'download' and then you can use the rest of your membership to download other stuff.

DISCLAIMER: I understand the issue of copyright but what can you do if they don't make the stuff available?

reply

I'm very careful about copyrights, because I believe in getting paid for the job you do, even if it's more than I get for my job. Also, I have a friend who's an actor in Spain and I know how much work goes into a single scene, so I'm very respectful.
But, I also say that I have all the intention to buy DVDs when they come out, and I always do. But in the meantime, I'm just borrowing. I'm downloading the second season of the MEntalist, because I can't see them on TV in English (besides, they're not on satellite TV and where I live normal TV does not work), but as soon as they come out I'll ordered them. So it's not like stealing, more like borrowing.
However, my actor friend does not share my opinion. LOL

I totally agree with you, the problem is that the entertainment industry hasn't yet woken up to the fact that the world is no longer divided by geographical boundaries. I.e. if a show is out in the U.S. say on Monday 20th February, it's totally unreasonable and absolutely *pointless* to expect people in Italy, or in the U.K. to wait until, say, June to watch it when their local network gracefully decides to let them watch it. Have they not heard of the internet, or on-demand TV? It's not going to happen. Why should I wait, so that by the time June comes along I've stumbled across ALL possible spoilers and I know who Red John is, what the hell is going on on Lost, the colour of Nick's pants in Episode 13 of Season 3 and so on and so forth.

The Mentalist for example....Season 2 is not out yet, but it's halfway through in the U.S. - why should I wait until godknowswhen?

They are shooting themselves in the foot, big time. This is why the music industry lost to illegal downloads, they were so slow to understand the market, and now it's too late because there I people (I know many of them) who will not even remotely contemplate paying for music.

Oh well. I should get off my soapbox. Of course the moment The Mentalist S02 comes on on DVD in the US I will buy it (in the UK Season 1 has ONLY just come out, pathetic...)

reply

It's what I said exactly. I'm watching the mentalist through the web until I can buy the US DVDs. Why should I wait until I know how everything went! I remember that when the last HP book came out, all the news reported on how it ended and I felt robbed of one of the greatest pleasure readers can have: reading a book guessing how it's gonna end.
About legal stuff, I think that just watching Region 1 DVD's on my hacked blue ray player is illegal, but I'm paying rights to the various workers involved in movie making (except for European distributors), so, hell, I don't feel guilty! LOL

reply

Hell yeah, I forgot that I'm also breaking the law as I hacked my JVC DVD players years ago when I bought it, so I can watch DVD R1. I might be on the FBI's most wanted list by now!

Both Season 1 and Season 2 are available on BarnesandNobles.com and are authentic

reply

They're also on Amazon.

reply

Hmm I suppose there's no chance of series 3 being issued.. not enough of us. I caught the last 7 episodes on Five USA and am now hooked. As I live in the UK I will have to buy a worldwide DVD player to view the DVDs unless anyone has any suggestions ? Jan

reply

All three seasons are now available on Amazon.com.
It sucks that it's only available in region 1.
I hope that someday it will also available in region 2 with Dutch subtitles.
I can watch it in English but it's just easier with subs.
So you can watch the episode even when someone is talking during.

reply

You can buy DVD players (I see them on Amazon.com) that play all the regions. Don't know about the subtitles, though. I think that has to be included with the DVD.
