This show is freaking hilarious.

I agree This show wasn't that bad. I recently bought the dvd set. It was the first time I'd seen all of them. I thought the show was pretty funny.

frankly, the first season of this show was much funnier than the first season of her previous, better known sitcom and it's a shame cbs didn't stick with it ... cloris leachman is one of the most versatile actresses ever imho with a range from comedy to drama, not an easy bridge to cross ... with all this nonsense about how talented and old betty white is lately (i am late to this thread of course) i wonder why leachman doesn't get the same or more coverage ... i think she's far more talented than white whose character on both the old MTM show and golden girls wore thin very very quickly ... i've never tired of watching leachman get the most out of her characters whether it be from her oscar-winning performance in the classic 'the last picture show' or to her work on this sitcom ... she's always on her game it seems to me ... white is just coasting along frankly ...

this show was good ... could have really gotten very good with a bit more time and with the characters able to grow more

I just bought the entire series on dvd because I love Ellen, but have no recollection of this series at all, anyway so far I have watched about 5 episodes and with each one I get a little more sad knowing that I am getting closer to the end and there will never be any more, this show is hilarious, and Cloris Leachman is the perfect woman to play her Mom, what a hilarious match! What a shame this show didn't last!

reply

Wow. I couldn't have said it any better. I remember thinking the same thing, while watching the episodes: with each viewing, I'm getting closer to "the end." So, rather than watching several episodes at a time, I chose to watch one episode each Saturday morning, for 18 weeks. It made it last longer!

I really do miss this show. Everyone on the show was fabulous. They all seemed to fit well with each other. It's a shame that it got such poor ratings.

Jqltlgeg,
Wow, what a well thought-out, elightening post, really makes one think.

That was sarcasm...

I LOVE this show! I am so glad it came out on DVD, because I kept trying to tape it when it was on. But the TV station kept changing the day and time it was supposed to be shown. I'd set my VCR and then get something else that was substituted. That might be the reason it failed--it wasn't placed in a permanent time slot (at least not where I live.)

I watch this show over and over. I wish it would have lasted longer than one season. I hope Ellen finds another sit-com someday.

Or, it may have not been given a permanent time slot because it was failing.

I remember seeing an episode or two, reruns, and... meh.

This Show is crappy

This show is freaking hilarious.

The truth, as usual, lies somewhere in between. The show is painfully average, and IMO, it deserved cancellation.

reply

The show is crappy because of the storylines. Bad!!! IMO.

I agree. I assumed the reason it didn't last was because people were still mad at Ellen for coming out in her last show, and by being "in your face" about it by having her new character be gay from the start, but no... it's just plain BAD. And I LOVE Ellen. I bought it for super cheap, never having seen it before (but I assumed I'd at least seen it a little bit - nope. Not remotely familiar.) thinking that even if I didn't like the show, I would still like Ellen in it. Not so much. She's funny, but not as funny as usual. There are 2 moments in the show that made me laugh so hard, I couldn't breathe, but other than those 2, the jokes were just dumb. There are a LOT of REALLY BAD plays on words that seem to be what the writers consider to be the funny thing about the show, because it's all the way throughout the series. But yeah, bad. Really bad. I'm not sorry I bought it, it was only $6, and I'm not sorry I watched it either. But I'm really glad I only paid $6 for it, and that I didn't have anything better to do with my time anyway.

For the record, the two parts that made me laugh:
1) When the stylist from Vanity does her hair. I laughed SO hard the first time, and (knowing I would never watch this show again), I rewatched it right after I finished the series, but it wasn't nearly as funny the second time.
2) When her mom's boyfriend Joe comes over, and she's trying to stop him from consuming alcohol. I laughed JUST as hard the second time I watched that part. It is almost worth keeping the series for that scene.

But really, that's it. And that's sad. She's so funny, usually.

...don't just laugh. Answer the pepperoni.
