Ellen Richmond is a lesbian but it isn't the centerpiece of her life or the show. It's just something she happens to be. The focus of the show is big city girl comes back home to small town and the wacky adventures that occur.

It's not the center of the show but watching the few episodes, she winks at it more than once. The best joke being a scan of Ellen's old room filled with seventies lesbain pop icons and even this poster of a painting that looks a whole lot like....well just say "something"! Cloris and Ellen enter the room and the most obivious but hilarious joke comes up, "Didn't have a clue, huh, mom?"
shareYes, in either the pilot or second episode she mentions it to her ex and her old high school teacher (who then tries to fix her up with the female phys ed instructor), and she occasionally makes reference to women she's dated.

It looks like your question has been answered, but yes. Her character is gay. She both outright says it several times, and also alludes to it throughout. But no, it's not a storyline or anything. She never dates, and she doesn't have any love-interests.

Yes, she is gay. She said it in the Pilot episode.
