Belushi gets a bad rap but he is funny... in his own way. I can see how its lasted this long.

reply

I like this show, its great!

reply

I hate this show, why would SHE marry HIM!

reply

Why would Debra marry Ray Barone.
Why would Carrie marry Doug Heffernan.
Why would George Burns marry Gracie Allen (as their characters that is).
Why, why, why?

reply

@ Carrie

Because she came as a package with "Spooner".

Are you really as dumb as you seem to be?

Obviously my post was in response to some other post which has since been removed from this thread. Agree with me? There is nothing in my post to either agree or disagree with.

Belushi is great in The Defenders, but According to Jim is drivel, and I can't understand why it would stick around for 8 years.

reply

Agreed.

Garbage TV.

reply

No he's not...he's very annoying and he lies all the time...good example for his kids right? Bad show, worst than Reba.

I bailed on this show soon after it started, so I haven't seen any episodes after that. My impression at the time was, "This show just isn't funny." I don't know whether it improved after I quit watching, but I've heard that it did not.

But with the fragmentation of the mass market today, and with so many choices out there, perhaps it's not surprising that it maintained a loyal audience large enough to keep it from being cancelled early on. I grew up in the '50s-'60s, and I remember sitcoms that ran a long time, but that I didn't find funny at all, not even as a kid. E.g., I thought "Leave it to Beaver" was a very good, funny show; but I found "The Donna Reed Show" to be forced and boring--not very funny at all.

Same thing with "The Life and Loves of Dobie Gillis" and "Gilligan's Island," the latter of which just seemed silly and full of broad, slapstick humor (although Ginger and Mary Ann were hot). But "Gilligan's Island" was one of my maternal grandmother's favorite shows, and it had a pretty good run--it also did well in syndication. Another example: I thought "Hee Haw" was atrocious, but it had a loyal following, especially in the Midwest. And I'm sure there are many other examples.

So it's true that "there's no accounting for taste." And in today's market, with lots of channels and other media outlets, there will probably always be shows that limp along because of a loyal market segment that's large enough to keep them alive.

As George Carlin said, "Think about how stupid the average person is. Then remember that half the people are stupider than that."

One of my friends believes that his father watched "Hee Haw" just because no one else in the family could stand it.

According to Jim: 8 years, 182 episodes.

Pushing Daisies: <2 years, 22 episodes.

thats whats wrong. wrong with TV and wrong with America.

reply

Yes, According to Jim sucked, but so did Pushing Daisies. They're not really comparable, though, since one is a sitcom and the other is more fantasy/mystery.

I can understand where people hate it, the wife isn't the typical ethereal, wise woman who knows the answers to every problem. She is just as bitter and vindictive as Jim in many episodes. That's what made me enjoy the show, even the lackluster episodes. Cheryl wasn't perfect and the show managed to examine this aspect while keeping Jim on the level with her. Sure he had his idiot moments, but so did his wife. It wasn't the typical relationship shown (idiot husband is a buttt monkey to his more intelligent more benevolent wife).

I'm surprised that so many people like to watch bitter, vindictive characters, but evidently there are enough to have kept soap operas in business for 70 years.

reply

That's the same reason I quit watching "All In the Family" in the '70s and, more recently, "$#*! My Dad Says." I just got tired of everybody's yelling at everybody else all the time. Even "Everybody Loves Raymond" had a lot of that, but at least the jokes were usually pretty good.

Another example of a show that's getting close to the edge of what I can tolerate re: shrill strife: "The Big Bang Theory." I love this show, but it's gotten to the point where they focus too much on Sheldon Cooper and how annoying he is to everyone else. They need to give other characters more dialog and screen time, and quit overexposing Cooper. But at least the show is funny, so this sort of makes up for that problem.

one of the worst THINGS i've ever seen in my life. seriously, i mean every piece of "work" like poems, novels, photographs, paintings, sculptures, music, theatre, feature films, short films, tv series, stand-up shows...

it survived so long thanks to some luck and coincidence. before its final cancellation it already got close to be cancelled.

i'm glad i dont have family members and friends like all in this piece of crap. i'd prefer to live in a single-room house than living there with those absolutely stupid people.

AtJ is supposed to be funny, right? congragulations to those who managed to laugh

reply

I'm not surprised at all that it lasted eight seasons, most episodes I have seen are pretty darn funny. Not one of the best sitcoms of all time or anything, but it definitely was a quality tv show. The chemistry between Jim and Andy was great, they were both hilarious.

Seems to be a lot of haters on here when it comes to ATJ. Glad that TBS airs the show daily.
