I am sorry but I must debate this issue; the networks don't like "SMART" shows, as it really has nothing to do with race. Seriously, check out the shows that are really on; aside from action(which has a huge demographic; it's not a race issue whatsoever as EVERY ethnicity I know including my Spanish speaking Latino family members in Mexico adore 24 and all the CSI's) so aside from that, check out the *beep* that's on the TV.
Then, take into consideration the shows that have been cancelled after one season, or cancelled after part of a season: I had a blog on a now defunct site that listed some of these as some of the smartest shows NOT on TV anymore:
The Job(w/Denis Leary...a comedy cop show on ABC, huge network and very funny show that had Bill Nunn from School Daze)
Freaks and Geeks (teen dramedy about life in a 'burb of Detroit in 1981 on NBC...another HUGE network...wouldn't even let them finish the season so writers scrambled to write an ending)
My So-Called Life (teen drama on another HUGE network, ABC and IMHO one of the smartest and wonderful dramas ever made for teens and families covering issues from teen sex, drug/alcohol abuse, homelessness, homosexuality, real life.)
Keen Eddie (a cop dramedy that takes place in the UK with an American cop played by Human Target's Mark Valley...one of the SMARTEST cop shows ever. BTW...the policed chief in London/Scotland yard was none other than Colin Salmon from James Bond movies).
Everwood (teen drama about a Jewish family who uprooted from NYC after the death of the mom to the small "podunk" town of Everwood. Turns out the uber surgeon father takes his invested millions and provides medical care to all patients whom ask or need it.)
That's a small list. I am upset about losing Bernie Mac, Half and Half(a huge guilty pleasure in our house), the George Lopez show and Ugly Betty(ending this April). I think it's wonderful to see minorities in a more "normalized setting according to what one may consider normal" as I am so sick of seeing movies about the 'hood and the barrio...it ain't all like that. It's working class, trying to raise your kids the best way possible, trying to make ends meet, dealing w/family, etc...I personally think it's smart..brilliant. And sadly missing on TV today.
But then again, take another look at the dramas of now; Glee, Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries(very bad IMO, I was so disappointed in Vampire Diaries) the return of 90210...I notice a bit of a pattern as people seem to want an escape, not reality.
Just what I think.
PS: Here's a website with a cool topic: Brilliant BUT Cancelled Blog, It's not mine but I think you'll dig it.
