Season 5 plot hole (attack on CTU)

Why didn't McGill and the security guard just run outside (i.e. exit the building) after they had activated the air conditioning thingy? We know that Henderson escaped easily, so why couldn't they?

Couldnt they have put in a call asking them to unlock the doors so these men's lives could be saved...
