why do so many people hate this movie and MTM's performance?

It's as if they can't handle MTM as anyone other than Mary Richards or Laura Petrie. Granted, it's a star turn par excellenece, but what a turn it is. MTM obviously understands the inner workings of a sociopath (think Scott Peterson) and manages to convey the true sickness through every pore in her body. And pardon me for saying so, but she looks HOT as a 60s floozie. She was about SIXTY-FIVE when she made this flick and doesn't look a day over 30. Great makeup and hair jobs. MTM gets my vote for one of the most underrated actresses around. Comedy (of course), drama, melodrama, or fact-based biography-- ain't much Mare can't handle and handle well. I'd taped this when it first aired and had never seen it till a couple of nights ago. Was sorry that I'd forgotten about it. Kudos to the actor playing her son and as well as to Jean Stapleton.
Keep workin', Mare!

Judy Davis was much better.

She doesn't look a day over 30? Were you wearing your glasses when you watched this film? Even through all the make-up and plastic surgery, it's still plain and clear she is a senior citizen.

i dont know about "so many people" but i thought it was a very uncomfortable performance. nothing to do with not liking her in less than happy roles. my favorite role of hers is in Ordinary People.
