sonatine

Anyone else notice how similiar this film is, structurally and themetically, to Sonatine? Don't get me wrong, it's not a ripoff, I love this film, but a lot of the film felt like Sonatine to me...

Yeah i know what you mean, like when they're messing around at the beach. Sonatine is my favourite Kitano film by the way.

I couldnt stand Sonatine. ANd not because there isnt a lot of action i watch all kinds of long dramatic films but Sonatine didnt cut it for me.

I thought DOA2 was more creative, exciting, and its very rewatchable.

They're both about lost innocence and impossible redemption, and both use long "seaside games" sequences. But the tone felt completely different, at least to me. Sonatine is solemn like classical music whereas DOA2 is more like indie rock.

I really see nothing in common between both movies. Also remember that Kitano films a lot in the beach because he can work at peace, without having fans of his tv shows bothering him with autographs all the time. He is a very popular tv personality in Japan.
