saw it yesterday

We saw Coastlines yesterday in Tallahassee at the All Saints Theater (screened by the Tallahassee Film Society).

Needless to say, we loved it.

For those who have been wondering about the delay in the release ... there were two articles about the film in the Tallahassee Democrat a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately they have already rolled into the pay-only archives. The short of it is bad timing and bad reviews. Coastlines played at Sundance in January 2002; the audiences may have liked it but the New York critics did not. They are influential with distributors, and no distributor picked up the film at that time, making finding a distributor much more difficult. And 9/11 happened during post-production, and the mood of the movie "people dealing with very private and personal issues" in Nunez' words -- was in conflict with the mood of the country. I'm sure it wasn't the only movie to suffer from this shift.

I agree. I'm glad this film is finally going to see the light of day. I thought it was a bit slow at times, but the movie was a valuable testament to the flexibility of loyalty and human bonding. Could have made Tim Olyphant a nig star alot sooner. But, alas, he has Die Hard 4 in the words, so life isn't so bad.
