want to play blood?

hey, i recently dl'ed blood after buying it 11? years ago. and let me say, i still think this is one of, if not "the" best fps games ever made. certainly the best horror themed fps.

if you wanna play it's easy and hard. the easy parts are these...

it's a free game (called abandonware online).
you can dl at "home of the underdogs" a free old games site at about 26 MBs.
it's the "one whole unit of blood" game with the "post mortem" and "cryptic passage" add-ons included. sweet.

the hard part for those not computer geeks is the actual playing.

windows pretty much can't play the game, although there are methods that work for some people. you need to download a program called "dosbox". you can get this on "home of the underdogs" as well.

the usage instructions for dosbox are on the site.

short instructions are these...

you have to put blood in c:/games or replace the c's i've written with your drive letter..

when the dosbox box loads type (including the spaces)... mount c :c/games/blood

press enter. then type c:

press enter. a c: will appear. type dir/p

press enter. dosbox will list the files in that directory.

press any key to get through this and it will go to a c:\>

type setup.exe to setup your options. then go down to the last line "save and launch blood" to play.

at the place you typed setup.exe you can also type blood.exe or cryptic.exe for which ever you want to play.

i know! sounds like a lot of work right? but it's worth it! look online for how to make dosbox shortcuts and you're all set.

also if you do this or are already playing blood checkout planetblood.com and http://postmortem/edgegaming.com for awesome user-made maps, levels and full blown add-ons!! great stuff there. especially the rage against the machine episode.

It's not free. Abandonware isn't a valid legal term. For many games, it's true that they've been abandoned and nobody may care if you're distributing them, but that doesn't make it legal. Unless the company/author has specifically designated them as freeware or stated that they can be freely distributed, the games are still under copyright, making it illegal to download them.

Not that I'm guilt-free when it comes to downloading old games, I just think you shouldn't have any illusions that it's legal.

That said, you can buy Blood and its add-ons from Good Old Games, pre-configured for use on modern systems.

That's because Microsoft has worked hard to kill off backwards compatibility.

One easy way to run the game is to grab an old system with Windows 98 on it. You can typically find old Pentium systems in the trash or at the dump. I had Blood: One Whole Unit installed on a 1.8Ghz Win98SE system and apart from one room in one level, it worked perfectly. The one room I had trouble with had a mirror in an alcove and whenever I looked at that one particular mirror, the game slowed to a crawl. Avoid looking at it and everything was fine.
