Most Disturbing Film I've Ever Seen - BY FAR !

The director wanted to reveal the horror, depravity, inhumanity, despair and near destruction of North Korea- and all who inhabit it- resulting from the civil war(still unresolved) and the American military occupation(still continuing)of this nightmare-ish conflict - which, while begun in 'ideals'(commies vs democracy), has long since deteriorated into pointless hate, fear, and animalistic survivalism.
I rented it by mistake.
I had been seeing good Korean films like "Oldboy" & "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance"- which, are, definately "disturbing" in a psychological-horror-suspense-ish kind of way...so 'Netflix' "recommended" this(did anybody at Netflix actually WATCH it, I wonder???)....and the brief description gave NO warning of the true nature of the film. I pointed this out to them later - too late for me !
I must admit, the director achieved his aim perfectly(he comments at length about his motives at the end of the film). I was both horrified, and devastated-(I was actually sobbing!)by the movie's end. No. Worse than that, really - I felt beaten/bludgeond/mentally,& psychic-ly(?), battered. Watching that film, was "punishment" - for "crimes againsed humanity" - whether I was ignorant of my complicity, or not. And; Yes - if I were the director, or any of the Korean people, forced to endure the existence - SO horrifically!-portrayed in the film - I would, absolutely, want to show the WORLD, what a heinous crime had been committed...And: I'd want to 'try','convict', and also 'punish' those guilty - though blithely, blissfully unaware of it - until they wept(SOBBED!)in horror! And then,(hopefully), repented. And maybe vowed to try to help repair, recompense, or at least try to AID in some way!
Alas.
I was SO disgusted, shocked, and mortified by the images and the hopelessness I'd witnessed, that I have- resolutely - attempted to put it all - COMPLETELY!-out. of. my. mind. Erased.
If only I could "un-see" the whole movie... Being reminded of it is very much like experiencing a PTSD episode.
So.
My soul may be damned, but I have to say it: Excellent film? Yes. Milestone achievement? Probably. Would I recommend it??? NO. Hell. No. HELL NO !!!
It should be banned - or rated X- for being as guilty of cruelty(or "crimes againsed humanity")as those who sent North Korea into their permanent Purgatory-Dystopian state! Know any martyrs? Send THEM there to help! Have any enemies you want to damage? Give THEM this film to watch!
I refused to let my husband see it. Wouldn't even describe the details of "why"!
But:
It WOULD be a PERFECT film for G.W.Bush(&Co.!)to be forced to see ! And all those who love to rush into war in order to impose "Democracy" on the heathen.
For their own good.
Like Korea.

Hahaha, Sorry but I have to confess that I'm so happy for you to suffer from this film cuz this is such a honest looke at the true reality, this emotional pain should be admired as a true evidence of humanism. I wish you recommend this pain to everyone around you who don't realize how they suffer somewhere around the world. Art makes people grow up.

I too am glad that you saw this movie, because it's obviously given you some sort of revelation. Yes, this film is surely depressing but it's the kind of story people need hear. Korea is one country that has been through alot of *beep* and all of that *beep* has been inflicted by foreign powers in some way or another.

Not most disturbing but I think it was the darkest movie I have seen in about 5 years... everything just goes wrong for everboy.
I got a collection with 3 of his films, i do not hope the 2 others are just as depressing

It's South Korea, not North.

You must have never seen the film Imprint by Takashi Miike, now THAT was disturbing! But yeah, Dogs getting beaten to death with a baseball bat then chopped up and sold to a Korean market is pretty disturbing too.

wow... hard to tell that we saw the same movie. Yes -it was very dark, but it had so many quirks and moments with the glimpse in the eye that it really didn't feel halfway as dark as it actually was. I loved it and would recommend it to many, it'll be fun to see if anyone gets as strong a reaction as you did. ^^ Congratulations on having an eye-opener btw, nice to see how the world looks like outside your bubble, eh? ;P

i liked the film and your absurd post made me want to comment.

can you explain which scene exactly was disturbing as per say?? ever single act of brutality in the film appears off screen and off frame. the camera never shows even a nick or cut for that matter. we see blood dripping on occasions and even then the source is never shown.

I am sure you have watched a different film than me. If not you need to watch more films to see what the term "disturbing" actually means.

Hope you are not one of those people who cried while watching Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

all being said it was a lovely film which can be described as "SAD" at best. Never disturbing.
