Fox News fans, do you remember Cliven Bundy at all?
Now compare the media coverage of his actions against the government which were unjustified and criminal from the get-go (he owed $1 million in *beep* grazing fees people) with how the media is covering the demonstrations in New York and as they did in Ferguson.
Before his racist comments, Cliven Bundy was hailed as a patriot fighting for his rights from the beginning by numerous media figures (Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity) and was just this close to being canonized by Fox News as an American hero. He and his followers were ready to fight a war with the U.S. government over unpaid grazing fees. GRAZING FEES!!!!!!
And what happened later? Jared and Amanda Miller, 2 members of his faction, were thrown out for being too crazy and they went and killed two police officers in Las Vegas. They were vehemently anti-government and they CRAVED the opportunity to kill a government official, especially a police officer.
What is my point with this post? The media covered the shootings but did not give a rat's ass if it was connected to Cliven Bundy or the media's inexcusable glorification of his actions despite the consequences that could arise from it. This phenomenon is called stochastic terrorism. And most American perpetrators of this brand of violence happen to be white yet no one bats an eyelash.
Meanwhile, the protests in Ferguson and the #BlackLivesMatter movement has been treated unfairly by the media from the get-go. I'm not just blaming Fox News (though it deserves the most) but the American media in general for further fostering the continued survival of white privilege in America.
The difference in media coverage between the Cliven Bundy standoff and what's happening since August is an excellent definition of White privilege in America. An old white racist can raise a private militia over his stupid financial woes and a standoff ensues WITH THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT. Meanwhile, black demonstrators are pepper-sprayed, shot with tear-gas, and are treated as enemy combatants when they protest police brutality.
No one sees something wrong here at all? Oh wait I forgot I'm on IMDB. Let me guess, you just don't care. Do you?
