Meaning of names?

I am not very good at how names worked in those days? Did having a surname of Julius come from him being born in July 100 BC? What does Gaius mean? Is it considered his middle name? I read somewhere of a Sextus Julius Ceasar. And is Caesar really his first name or is that just my misunderstanding?

Thank you!

I watched an episode on HBO last nite cause I have a free HBO weekend thingie going right now.

They use the F word every now and then...was the F word around in those days, LOL!

Otherwise pretty cool...not often you see a series that is about an ancient civilization.

I went on the cast list on IMDb and it's Ciaran Hinds, right? He is a really good actor even tho I've only seen him in one movie, Weight of Water. He played a German immigrant. He seems like a good actor.

This is a bit late, and I don't come close to fully understanding Roman naming conventions but it's something like this: Gaius Julius Caesar - Caesar is the family name of his father. Julius means he is member of the Patrician (noble) family house of Julii, and Gaius is his first name. A rough English translation would be Gaius Caesar of the House Of Julii.
The month of July was named after Julius Caesar, rather than vice versa.
