Did Mitch call T.J. Hooker ' Bill'?

In the part where they are acting when they taste drugs,Deniro calls Shatner "Bill".Is that a goof?

reply

no because that doesn't happen.

Michelle would never *beep* a horse.

reply

Yeah, De Niro does call Shatner 'Bill', but thats because he's playing himself right?

reply

It`s obvious answer, he called him William... Bill for short. Even some interviews from the cast members from "Star Trek" called him Bill before.

reply

Good grief... Bill is short for William.

Just as Bob is short for Robert.

reply

OP, tell me you're under the age of 8 or are kidding?...

reply

Bill = a short form of William. William Shatner was playing HIMSELF in the movie, not acting as a character. Thus calling him Bill is completely appropriate and not a goof.

reply

Oh my lord. This is the problem here. No one can actually figure out that Shatner IS NOT playing himself in the movie but is in fact playing the character of TJ Hooker. No reference is ever made that he is William Shatner, and it is pretty well held up that he is playing TJ Hooker throughout the film. So, when De Niro calls him Bill during the drug testing scene, AND YES HE DOES ("That's why real cops don't taste drugs Bill."), IT IS A GOOF!!!!!! Jesus, was I the only person to figure out that Shatner was playing TJ Hooker?

Then why is William Shatner's character listed as "Himself" on the Imdb and not T.J. Hooker?

reply

It actually used to be listed as TJ Hooker...and the lines in the movie also support him playing TJ Hooker...at no point in the movie, other then when De Niro calls him Bill, is it ever mentioned that he is William Shatner playing TJ Hooker...

reply

I'm sorry to disappoint you but I checked the dvd's credits last night. William Shatner is listed as playing Himself.

reply

That is bizarre if you ask me. Really, none of the dialogue in the movie supports Shatner as being anyone but TJ Hooker. Can anyone tell me anywhere in the movie where he isn't called "TJ"? AHHH I am so confused...

Trey says something like TJ Hooker is the most underrated police SHOW of all police SHOWS... If Shatner is playing the character of TJ Hooker, then why does Trey reference to the TV show??

It could be that in the movie's universe TJ hooker was a real reality TV cop

reply

Then why does Shatner himself refer to TJ Hooker as "Hooker," instead "me" or "I"?

He's playing "Bill," the actor who played TJ Hooker and a parody of Shatner's own persona.

When I first saw this movie, that was my first instinct; and I REALLY wanted it to be that way(they were essentially getting advice from the master of what they were currently going through)...

...but when he called him "Bill", and credited as himself in the credits, that pretty much sewed it up.

Shatner is playing himself. So Bill is the short way for William...

Alright, my mistake, I should have figured that out when I was a child.

And Shatner also says 'I played a cop in the 80's. This isn't rocket science everyone. Shatner is playing himself and they talk about T.J. Hooker. When DeNiro calls him T.J., after falling off the car, it's sarcasm.
