Do Americans dislike subtitles that much?

I live in the uk and got shenmue as soon as I got my dreamcast, and shenmue 2 as soon as it came out. I was surprised to hear it didn't come out in america for the dreamcast. Since they didn't like subtitles and there was no english voice over.

Was there another reason it wasn't sold in America? I didn't hardly notice the subtitles. I would have been pretty annoyed if I was American and had to import shenmue 2, or worse yet wait how ever many years for the xbox version.

Obviously I can see that people might prefer english voices, but if they had no choice I can't see that it would have put people off buying it. Especially if they were fans of the first.

In my opinion Shenmue in original Japanese with English subs is the best way to play.

I am British but I need to hear Corey Marshsll's voice as Ryo, that why I bought Shenmue 2 on x-box

I bought and beat Shenmue II Eurpoean version for Dreamcast way before I even got it for Xbox (just got it to have it). It wasn't a problem buying the import, I had to get a loader disc but it was way worth it. And I preferred the foreign audio with subtitles over the American voice over big time.

Only the lazy to read Americans like English voice acting. I like reading subtitles (I grew up on foriegn movies, and imported anime). Movies and games always sounds better in the original lanuage

No, it's not that Americans dislike subtitles that much, its that publishers think that Americans dislike subtitles that much. And it is up to American publishers what Americans like and dislike.
