Interpretation of what happened?

>>Warning - Possible spoilers<<

I'm hoping some people can give their interpretations of what exactly these two girls were trying to "plot," if that is the right word, with the mechanic character. The film makes it clear they were doing something deceitful, but I can't really seem to fully grasp the concept. Anyone? (Responses will probably need spoiler warnings.)

i don;t think they were actually trying to plot anything. i think lori, conscious of michael's feelings for her and scared of them at the same time, decided to set him up with her sister. the reasons i think she chose her sister is 1) charlotte isn't likely to embark on a serious relationship with michael and therefore gives lori a chance if she changes her mind. at the same time, lori is scared about how she feels; she has these nascent feelings for him, but she's scared to admit them because it would ruin the friendship. The second reason i think lori decides to set charlotte/darcy up with michael is that it also gives her a good excuse to not date him- she can't after all date a man her sister has dated. i know these two reasons conflict, but the character is conflicted as well. she wants this man yet she is afraid of the changes it will entail...i don;t know if that's what u wnated to know maybe the answers to long, but yeah i think that's what happened. there wasn't an actual deceit planned, lori wanted to set her sister up with michael (for the reasons stated above), but charlotte refused. charlotte then shows up at the club where (presumedly) lori has told michael likes to go to (but lori doesn't know it, she still thinks her sister doesn't want to meet michael). why charlotte/darcy changes her mind isn't explained though.

Lori suggested to Michael that she wanted to set him up with someone. In the final scene, Michael already knows that this someone turned out to be Darcy/Charlotte. Lori says in response, "I told her about you, and she said no. But then she showed up at the club anyway." (I'm just paraphrasing, can't remember the statement word for word.)

Lori and Charlotte are probably sisters. When Lori's mom calls, Lori mentions not speaking to someone, a woman. Plus, when it is revealed at the restaurant bathroom scene that they know each other, Charlotte is actually peeing right in front of Lori.

It seems to me that Charlotte and Lori have a really loaded history--resentments and suspicions on both sides. When Darcy/Charlotte talks about Michael's type ("I bet I know what kind of girl you like... small, pretty voice"), it seems that Charlotte resents Lori a bit. And Lori, of course, was suspicious that Charlotte was going to sleep with Justin. Lori didn't want to tell Michael because she didn't want to hurt him, but he had figured it out by seeing the pictures of the two together when they were young.

I agree with all of the above, but wanted to add something about Darcy/Charlotte as well. I think that she knew that Michael and Lori were meant to be together, but Lori would not leave hot guy. I think that Charlotte ended up hooking up with hot guy to benefit her sister, more than to benefit herself.

(Sorry, I cannot remember the boyfriends name, so he is listed as hot guy here)

I agree about Charlotte purposely seducing Justin so that Michael's path to Lori would be cleared. What I can't understand is why Michael would want her. She basically toyed with him and tortured him, loudly banging some other dude in his house, all the while knowing that he was madly in love with her. In my book, that kind of F-ery is inexcusable.

I am going WAY out on a limb, but the pictures Michael was looking at showed a young, petite little girl, assumed to be Lori and the other person in the picture was much taller, wearing a cowboy hat. Is it possible that Charlotte/Darcy was trans gender? Early in the movie when Darcy was introduced to us, she talked of her voracious appetite. Also the fact she was much taller than her sister.

I sss Lori as more pro-active about setting the whole thing up, if even a bit subconsciously. Her sister was a serial boyfriend stealer (which is why Lori calls her a monster), and she wanted to use this predictable behavior as an excuse to break up with her boyfriend thus insisting on the double date. She also wanted to get Michael out of his slump and get him a little more pro-active about things. Plus she wanted to test his devotion(she tests her bf also, by wanting to go to on the trip). Darcy would have slept with Michael the first time it came up to get her fix(which is why she met him secretly, more shocking to sis), but the 2nd time either she knew that Michael had already divested himself emotionally thus no fix, or she managed to have a bout of guilt about it, this being her sister's true love. In the end the gig is getting too old for Darcy and she is no longer able to get off by stealing, which is why she breaks down in tears.

"what is your major malfunction numbnuts?!!"
