My Review

It's hard to categorize this film...from the back of the DVD in the store, one would reasonably think that it would be a heart-wrenching film of loss and coming to grips with the death of a loved one...but as soon as you pop the DVD in and begin watching...you find that it's a quick-witted comedy/drama that tries much too hard to make the viewer take any of it seriously. At least I think that's where it was going. *shrugs*

The dialogue is very quick-witted...almost sitcom style. Every line is a quip...a sarcastic response to something the other character said...but, somehow, it doesn't really work because, after a few scenes, you begin to realize that...this is really all that's going on. I mean, come on, how can you be this sarcastic and witty...for that long.

Understand, I think the writer is one that writes dialogue very well. I listen and think, "Wow, that was the perfect response." It's just that...every single freaking line is sarcasm is biting wit. Nobody in real life always has the perfect witty response like these characters do.

They never talk about the real issue...they just keep joking about the issues. THAT is what bugs me...because, after awhile, I was so caught up in the style of dialogue...I ceased to take any of it seriously. I was too aware of the writer's method.

Kevin Pollack had great dialogue to work with here and I think he pulled it off briliantly. As usual. His comic timing is impeccable.

Mark Thompson, the son of the deceased mother, is not bad. He definitely reads his lines well and sells the performance. I just don't know who he is. Talent-wise, he's just above a soap actor...but, I can't figure him out in this character. Nobody is that funny and witty about such a serious issue for that long. He came across as a stand-up comic.

Dana Delany was brilliant as usual. She reminds me so much of Mary McDonald in her roles...and hasn't aged a day since I first saw her with Steve Martin in House Sitter.

David Keith was okay in his role as upper management at the radio station...but there was nothing that was "stand-out" about his role or performance. Of course, I doubt he was supposed to stand out. He's still a really fine actor.

For entertainment value, I recommend this film...as I would any fast-food entertainment. It did keep my attention and I do think it has some high points. If you like fast-driven, witty dialogue...like that of Wil & Grace and other witty sitcomes...you'll enjoy this.

Hell, you should see it for no other reason than Kevin Pollack is in it.

Just saw Mark and Kevin being interviewed by Leonard Maltin on Reelz channel and went to look it up.

According to Mark, it was made on weekends from Dec. 2001 through Thanksgiving 2002 and then was on the film festival circuit, but was never picked up by a major studio. It was released on DVD on April 3, 2007.

I found this movie at the video store and rented it simply because it has Kevin Pollak in it. Kevin, as usual, is wonderful and loveable. However, I disagree about Mark Thompson. I thought his performance was truly outstanding. After I watched this, I could not stop talking about it. On my recommendation, my husband decided to watch it, so, of course, I watched it again. It was just as good the second time around and my husband liked it as well. He too, thought that Mark Thompson was great. I would highly recommend this to everyone and it is unfortunate that it did not get a larger viewing. I think anyone with an open mind will thoroughly enjoy this thought provoking, heart wrenching movie.

Mark Thompson has a syndicated radio talk show called "Mark and Brian" for all of you who are interested. I was quite surprised to hear that he wrote a movie as well as acted in it as they have never made mention of it on the show. His partner on the radio show, Brian Phelps, can also be seen as the sleazy reverend on the Reno 911 tv show.

I just heard about this myself on their show a couple minutes ago. A listener called in with a bunch of praise for it. I had no idea that Mark had starred in a movie, let alone written it. I love Mark and Brian, so I'll have to check this out now.

Their radio show is syndicated nation-wide (they're based here in Los Angeles), so you guys might try and find out if any of your local stations pick it up. They are very respected in the radio industry and I think they've even got their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

I've always wondered what Mark would say if someone were to call in and ask him about Mother Ghost. How did he handle the praise?
