Why does everybody think Tidus is annoying

Can anybody oint out times where he seemed annoying? Because he seems alright especially near the end of the game where he really grows up

reply

Tidus is absolute quality and I'm guessing that people find him a bit of a whiner but he won Yuna's heart. The ending of this game was heart wrenchingly beatiful and I had to wait years for the perfect ending on X-2 to reunite the lovebirds!!

reply

Tidus screams randomly. I know why but I don't remember needing to scream for any reason.

He started laughing loudly and fakely to cheer up Yuna. Sure it cheered her up but I wouldn't laugh like that.

He always syas he hated his father. WE GET THE POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was very VERY cocky when it came to Blitzball.

And he just had a weird voice.

One thing that annoyed me most is that he could use a sword with no prior training. Can't believe nobody pointed that out lol.

then you might as well hate link too right?

reply

The difference between Link and Tidus is that Link didn't start out knowing the tools of the trade. As I mentioned in some games he was taught how to wield his sword. Auron was just like here, use this, and bam stuff was dead. Sure the first Zelda game was similar but as pointed out in the sequels he is of a long line of skilled knights that are of legend so it's in his blood to know how to use a sword. Just read my post in Cloud v Link for my views on that.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

Well also like you said in linkvcloud you just need good upper body strength and aiming and tidus has those from blitzball right and his overdrives dont look fancy do they he just slashes like link so thier swordplay are similar and when was he taught how to use a sword besides WindWaker by Orca and maybe Lttp by his Uncle

reply

I don't remember making lights rain down from the sky being basic combat. And remember that bltixball TAKES PLACE IN WATER WHERE THERE IS NO GRAVITY lol. Not to say he doesn't have those things but I'd think that making light rain from the sky using a sword would take awhile and not a few days.

In Minish cap he learns extra sword techniques from dojos around the world(?).

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

Yeah but minish cap wasnt that good and if you want to bring up realism Zelda isnt the game The Zora tunic, The light arrows, fire arrows, ice arrows, and a time-traveling sword, and the lights were probably magic and not the sword and those are abilities and he learns them

reply

Fire Arrows actually have been used in ancient times.

Didn't Tidus come from a different world completely? Do Shoopuffs exist? Where's that yellow flan....Why can't I find a cool blue see through sword that kills things easily...I'm going to a blitzball game tonight? Wait it doesn't exist....Why don't monsters randomly appear in front of me for me to test out my strength? Why aren't the Guado's around here? Man, Sin sure destroyed that city today........Don't use fantasy as realism because that won't work for either of us. I'm just using realism in the way someone learns to use a sword which is universal.

And I rather enjoyed Minish Cap. Of course it wasn't as great as the others but it was still enjoyable. And for a Zelda game it definitely was different enough to play through.

i don't remember finding tidus annoying at all. i don't get all the hate with him, people say he's whiny about his dad. when in fact he only mentioned it when someone asked him about it. other than that he kept it to himself...yea REALLY whiny.

but i liked the fact that he hated his dad and felt alone and scared in his new world, it's what made me accept him. that i could feel and symphathize with him. and the thing about him being homesick and hating his dad is something i could relate too. so he's not perfect person, who acts cool all the time. boo hoo.

ur telling me that if you were transported 1000 years in the future knowing that you would probably never go back, you wouldn't be even the LEAST BIT down??? puh-lease. that's why i liked tidus. because i thought they were just gonna make his character automatically adjust to his new environment when really he was homesick for alot of the game. tidus is a great character! he's real and flawed just like any other person.

reply

Tidus hated his dad......much like Cloud hated Sephy......Sure he kept it to himself but the fact is we can hear his thoughts. And he does act cool all the time. STAR OF THE ZANARKAND ABES!!!!!!!!!!! THE SUPER DELUXE JECHT SHOT MARK THREE!!!!!!!!!! WE WILL FIND ANOTHER WAY!!!!!!! NOTHING TO IT!!!!!

If I was transported 1000 years to the future I'd be upset slightly. But the fact that I know my father had been here would make me rest slightly easier because I'd be like "If he could make it here, so can I".

Oh and Tidus's dad is brought up quite frequently in case you missed it.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

Does Link coat the arrows in flammable substances no he draws power from the sun, and yes its not real and I honestly cant say it is but can you tell me that link should be able to adjust to his equipment so quickly Tidus used like two magic overdrives so what, Square has to make it look cool remember Links spin attack in oot he adjusted to that a little fast dont ya thinnk and in minish cap those like 5 magical moves were taught in like 10 seconds i dont think so

reply

You forget the sphere grid system where Tidus can cast the same spells as a Mage in roughly a weeks time(actual game time, not playing time). Neither FF or the Zelda's are realistic in that fashin.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

Tahnk you? so yeah Tidus and Link both lack realistic growth right?

reply

True but then again we have an explanation for Link's non-realistic growth while with Tidus we don't....Link is part of a long line of knights and Tidus is the son of a blitzball player lol.

Actually, it's very difficult to die standing up. People often fall down when they are killed.

In response to what you're saying:

-This is Final Fantasy, remember? They're supposed to have weird outfits!
-His voice is fairly high, but it's not squeaky. Sora has the high-pitched, squeaky voice.
-He only laughed to cheer Yuna up. Plus, that wasn't really goofy. Really goofy would be tripping, getting up, slipping and falling off a cliff, and shouting, "I'm okay!", then tripping again.

reply

I don't like Sora either. And last time I checked the FF's were trying to go for a more realistic feel lol.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

I never said that I didn't like Sora. I just said that his voice was much too high and squeaky for a 14 year old in the first game.

You'd better be careful around me, or you'll end up in my novel.

reply

Because he does the "unmanly" type of whining unlike Cloud and Squall who do the "manly" type of whining.

reply

When is whining ever manly? Did I miss some announcement made on the news?

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

The whole "look at my chest" thing when he put his hands behind his head and kind of tilts backwards.

reply

Most people in Japanese anime/video games do the "arms behind the head" thing quite often. It's not exclusive to Tidus.

reply

Well I really don't play video games besides Final Fantasy and I've never seen anyone do it as much as Tidus......... but you're probably right seeing as I don't have much experience with other Japanese games.

reply

That's not a real "cool guy" thing. It's a "relaxed guy" thing.

You'd better be careful around me, or you'll end up in my novel.

reply

I dunno. His emotions are kind of exaggerated, I guess; kind of an obnoxious, melodramatic character, particularly in comparrison to many of the other, more reserved characters. Even Yuna, who we get to know fairly well, and see a lot of ups and downs from, as well. I guess it has primarily to do with maturity; Tidus is not one that has much of this yet. He likes to act tough, but this toughness usually breaks down pretty quick when under real pressure, and he's revealed to be fairly vulnerable. He also makes some stupid decisions based on impulse. Like, on a few occasions, I thought to myself, "What the HELL are you DOING?"

*spoiler* Like when he told Shelinda, or whatever that acolyte girl's name is, that Yuna definitely wasn't getting married to Seymour. I would've prefered to have had an option to say something like "She doesn't know yet."*spoiler* Or when he "had to scream," or towards the beginning of the game, on the boat on the way to Kilika, I think. Yuna says something like "This wind is nice," and then Tidus and her just start laughing randomly (That's less of a Tidus specific thing, though, and more of a thing with the game in general that I found odd.) The first one annoyed me more; the other two occasions were more along the lines of "WTF?" moments.

His appearance also adds to what's grating about him, and mixed with the obnoxious aspects of his personality, it makes matters worse. For example, Zidane from FF9 had a bit of a silly character design, I suppose, but I can't really think of any certain aspect of his personality that I found annoying; he was pretty cool. Maybe it would have helped, too, if there hadn't been voice acting in the game, so I could imagine his voice with whatever inflection I chose to, instead of the generally whiny, higher-pitched direction that James Taylor took with it. That's a problem with the game in general; we are forced to take things in in a very direct, linear fashion. Kind of like a movie.

The end result is that he feels a lot like a kid. I don't mind kids, but him being as much like a kid as he is takes away his believability as the story's hero, somewhat. At least for me, anyway. For example, he did seem to actually have become my strongest character by the end of the game, dealing quad-nines to the "final boss," while Auron was only doing like around 5400-5600, or something. However, given his personality, I found myself thinking "huh? Tidus is stronger than Auron? What?" (Then again, it is Auron he was being compared to...)

I also think it would've helped if we weren't constantly having to see things from his point of view. This was actually done to get the gamer to sympathize with Tidus more, actually. Obviously, I think it was a mistake. Then again, millions of people would probably disagree with me on that. I'm one of those people who kind of "rejects" the main character, anyway, and I generally find one of the side characters to take interest in. We rarely got to know what the other characters were actually thinking in this game, however, even though they did give verbal input quite often. One character that particularly comes to mind is Lulu; she had a lot to say, but I had a really hard time reading her. There were only a handful of occasions where she showed much emotion at all, and really only a handful of situations where anything all that dramatic was happening with her character (and one situation in particular felt kinda tacked on; really, it probably was, given the circumstances in which it's discovered.) Therefore, she was a bit of an enigma to me throughout the entire game.

So, yeah; Tidus is a bit of an obnoxious character, who's obnoxiousness is magnified because we spend so much time seeing the world from his perspective. In my opinion, though, he wasn't really all that bad; I still found him to be pretty likeable, at least. He does have some strong moments, too; the end, in particular... Anyhoo...

reply

Tidus is 17 and was (he thought) hurled 1000 years into the future. How would have you liked him to handle that situation?

reply

I'd like it rather nicely actally.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

We'll pretend that made sense.

reply

Considering all of the positive words in it I assumed you would think it meant I wouldn't mind being sent 1000 years in the future.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

I'm sure you wouldn't. Especially since there was a giant whale trying to kill you, there was no one familiar around, and everything was totally different.

reply

Well if I was truly upset I would just jump into the giant whale so it would kill me. Problem solved. And since I could just go "Yeah, I got near Sin" then I wouldn't have any trouble finding people to get to know.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

Well DOnt think that would solve all his problems lobl. And in response to what you said a couple of posts ago i dont like the transition to realistic like ffxiis okay but it lacks what ffvii had

reply

Actually it might since if he's killed by sin and not sent he might be absorbed by sin and meet his daddy. And I was referring to myself anyways lol.

FFVII was probably the most realistic FF until the Black Materia thing. Everything beyond that was fantasy for the most part. At least anything involving Ol' Sephy.

I hate the transition as well in that the snes FF's are infinitely better than any of the playstation games ive played(notn including VIII or IX)

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

I dont know but ffx was okay with the japanese mythology inspiring it instead of the same boring old medieval european mythology Tetsyua made a good choice with that one.

reply

Nomura wasn't alone with this you know. He worked WITH Yoshinori Kitase whom also directed the game. Nomura only put the characters to the story. So you should be praising Kitase for picking the japanese mythology. I hate how him and only him always ever gets credit for the FF's ever since Kingdom Hearts. He isn't Final Fantasy.....Kitase did the story to VII, Chrono Trigger, and also co-produced in everything Nomura has done. To give Nomura and only Nomura credit for games is ridiculous.

FFVI is medieval? I'd love to hear your explanation of that one since it has a CHAINSAW and MACHINES which didn't exist in medieval times. VII is? Wow. Didn't know they ahd machine guns on arms in medieval times. VIII? People had gunblades in medieval times? I know what you mean but your post did nothing but boost Nomura's ego. Nomura WAS A CHARACTER DESIGNER and didn't write storyboards until FFX and didn't direct until KH where he assumed the role of creating FFVII when he really only designed characters. Yes, characters are important but not when you get credit for the entire game....

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

oookay a mistake on my part im just saying that ffxs universe was alot more adaptable than ff4s or ff9 sure i think kitases designs are good but nomuras have a sort of simplicity that give it a good feeling not like kitases where they have wispy feeling that gives it a eery dark feeling

reply

I would think the end of the world should give off an eerie feeling lol. I don't wanna play a game thats like "That monster is going to kill us, first lets dance around in a pool while we wear belts and zippers."

Sorry about that. Just felt like ranting about that. Just annoyed with how some people are not happy he's gone with FF after FFXIII. I for one am happy so people will begin to look at FF as a franchise on its own and not it's developer.

Your the ruler of two things. Jack and *beep* and Jack just left town.-Ash

reply

Actually just to point out in the starting of the game, Auron comes to Tidus with the sword at the one battle and says, " Do you still remember how to use this?"..he obviously *if I remembered what he said correctly* had training before with Auron.

I'd research that if i wasnt too lazy to get off my ass and find the game lol.

You are arguing about every single thing! I was thinking about giving you my opinion, but then I read through this thread, and your obnoxiousness easily steared me away from that. Tidus was very obnoxious at the beginning of the game, yes. He was arrogant, cocky, and generally everything I hate in a character. But he does change. I think, if he hadn't come to Spira and met Yuna and everyone, he would still be that annoying whiny kid he used to be. If you don't want to hear his voice, turn down the volume and read the subtitles. I think that it wouldn't be the same without voices. It just made the game experience even better. Tidus was a lot more likeable then a lot of the other characters. Squall was completely annoying. All he said at the beginning was "whatever". Oh, and then Rinoa comes in and he's "nice Squall now". Come on? Cloud, *beep* He was even more arrogant than Tidus was. He took on his dead friend Zack's personality and acted like a total *beep* Zack was nothing like that. Zidane was okay though. Just yeah, a little silly.

I think Tidus was one of the best FF heroes because he was one of the only ones who didn't act all emo and depressed all the time. That was really getting old.
