There are actually 2 versions of the ending.
The one that most people see in cinemas is:
"Where there is love, there is life"
In this version he doesn't die because he is saved by those that love him.
Then there's the uncensored version on the DVD I got in Taiwan:
"Love causes sorrow. Love causes fear. Those separated from love have
no sorrow and no fear."
Here, he has kind of achieved immortality (in the Buddhist sense) because he has seperated himself from love - hence he will have no sorrow and no fear (these are elements that bind us to the human world).
Well, that's my interpretation of the second version anyway. I liked this version a hell of a lot better than the first one. Coz, admit it, the first one is just so cheesy.
