Barcelona dirty = Racist ; American hate = OK ?!?! Stay classy.

When Anne-Sophie called Barcelona a dirty city, Xavier said it was racist to say that. Yet when Wendy was screwing around with the American, Xavier went on a bitchy hissy-fit, about the "typical ridiculous American prick", who Xavier called "stupid American guy, and don't tell me he's not stupid".

Are you kidding me?!?!? Concrete has more compassion than Americans?

Way to drown international viewers in the insane hypocrisy...though I'm sure the French saw nothing wrong. Seriously, GTFO with that irony.

mountainbiker, I agree. It's sad to see how far France has come in their hatred of Americans considering the direct benefit the aid of U.S. troops provided when they liberated Paris in World War II.

My mom met an elderly man from France almost 20 years ago. He had such a love and reverence for America, and especially the American servicemen, it filled his eyes with tears. That generation who remembers the sacrifice is gone now and has been replaced with the attitude expressed in this movie.

I would love for the French who feel Americans are stupid to say it to the faces of the families who have sons, husbands, brothers, and fathers buried in one of the American cemeteries in France. Better yet, say it to their faces while standing on that hallowed ground.

Americans didn't liberate Paris.

When the Americans entered an already liberated Paris, they forced the French troops to leave their black soldiers behind.

Who's racist now ?

I cringed at the whole "American = stupid" thing too, but really I feel in this movie they made the English brother guy look like the biggest idiot. So I mean, there's that ;P (Although at least they gave him a millisecond of redemption by actually making the main character laugh for a half a millisecond with the fly thing)

Anyway I think your post is a bit overly-dramatic. I haven't gotten the general sense that the French hate Americans. I've encountered more smack-talk from Australians and sometimes Brits than anything.

This movie was a bit all over the place, however I did like that moment where after living abroad for a year, he felt like a stranger going back home. It does change you to live abroad.

That scene must have went over your head as it clearly played out to make Xavier look and sound like a hypocrite as Wendy pointed out to him with regards to his generalization of her American fling/boyfriend.

Oh, and another thing lighten the fark up cause you sound just as whiny as Xavier does in that scene. LOL

reply

as Wendy pointed out to him with regards to his generalization of her American fling/boyfriend

Completely false.

Wendy said, "Oh no, of course, I know he's stupid."

The only hypocrisy pointed out during that dialogue exchange was cheating. Xavier asked about her boyfriend and Wendy rebutted, "*beep* Xavier, you can't talk. Look at you."

Oh, and another thing lighten the fark up cause you sound just as whiny as Xavier does in that scene. LOL

My apologies for highlighting a discordant truth of that we hold sincere.

Again, you're taking the critique of the Yank hippie WAY TOO PERSONALLY. He was just a gadfly vagabond looking for pussy and the English gal took a liking to him. Xavier and his coddled/privileged attitude immediately thought of him as a "Ugly American" when in fact he was probably more cultured and easy going than his own unaculturated French Ass.

reply

Fair point you make. You are right.

It's not Klapisch's veiled double standard we are supposed to see, it was rather Xavier's ostentatious and partiality.
