One thing I dont get

If she was a freshman, why didnt get she just wait til she was a senior to try get the T.A position? Because even if she got the position as a freshman wouldnt she still have to wait 3 more years to graduate anyway ? Or why didnt she kill someone who was an adopted senior? That part really irks me.
