One thing I never understood about the ending of the final episode......

If Swift knew he was going to watch David, Lisa, and Casper all die and turn into trees, why does he run all the way back to The Mountains? Was he hoping to convince them to not die? Or was he just simply trying to get a last look at them before they go?

I have to admit this was a sad, bittersweet ending. When Swift let out that loud cry, it really hit the nail hard.
