The Last Episode: 'The Mountains of Beyond'

I bought the complete series on DVD off ebay, and i would like to know if anybody remembers the last episode? It actually made me cry, it was that sad! But there are a couple of questions that are unanswered in that episode, and i would greatly appreciate anyone who knew the answers.

Why do Gnomes have to go to the Mountains of beyond when they turn 400? They mentioned in the episode that there was a Gnome that lived to be 500, so why can't they just wait until they die naturally?

Also, WHAT ARE THE MOUNTAINS OF BEYOND??? It doesn't explain it! Why do they have to go to that exact spot? How are they transformed into trees? I was thinking that Gnomes automatically turn into trees when they die, but why did they have to go there to die? And if they did die, then how did they die at the exact same time? Do they have the power to die on cue?

...excuse my rambling. I would greatly appreciate any input.

R.I.P David the Gnome (1586-1986)

im going to go ahead and say that the moutains of beyond is a metaphore for death, as in beyond the grave, and that the writers just tired of the plot and ran out of things to write, so they ended it. or, maybe the mountains of beyond is like florida, they go there when they turn 400 and eventually they die.

Tell me about it. I saw that episode when I was around 7 or 8, I think.
(I had been watching the show regularly).
I remember clearly how I cried for what seemed like hours.
It was such a beautiful, yet extremely sad ending.

I'm 20 btw.

Its a bit screwy but it clears and you will see it completely save for a small drink and toast with the old gnome around 10:50

shaman1 can you give us another thread because that doesnt work anymore thanks

i think you might be taking a children's cartoon series too seriously. death is a difficult subject to deal with in a kid's show, they were probably more concerned with doing it respectfully than the little details.

reply

Taking it too seriously? Did you watch that ending? Little kids shouldn't have to deal with that kind of pain in a 20 minute duration. I almost Cried when Swift Started too!

reply

holy crap i cried, as did most of teh internet.
I think if they didn't go to the mountains they would turn into trolls

does your house have stairs

I wish the trolls finally ate David, that would have been a sweet ending.

I read that "evil witch" summary a while ago, and fortunately it's totally wrong, because it makes their deaths sound violent and horrible.

The episode actually starts with David and Lisa talking about how they have to "go away forever", and they say goodbye to their friends. Then they go visit Casper, who is also going on the journey, because he doesn't want to go alone. They go with Swift to the Mountain of Beyond, and after saying goodbye stand on the mountain and turn into trees (I guess that's what happens when Gnomes die).

Swift sees all this happen and he's really sad, until he finds a girl fox and another Gnome named Christopher, and he goes off with them, saying goodbye to David, Lisa, and Casper one last time.

I think there was another Gnomes show that took place after this one, I don't remember if Christopher and Swift were in it or not, but they made reference to characters from David the Gnome.

You're welcome. Yes, having them go willfully was a much better way to go. The only thing I wonder about was the absence of their other gnome friends in the final episode. I remember them having relatives too, but maybe that was taken care of in the second-to-last episode.

You can find more about it by searching for 'david gnome final episode' on google.

As far as that moron who said "I wish the trolls finally ate David, that would have been a sweet ending" Dude, if you are trying to be a comedian about this, you stink and have a lousy sense of humor, and if you meant that, Congratulations, you have went from being a total moron, to a inconceivably stupid idiot!!!!!!

Forgive my harshness, but it's just that words couldn't describe how much I used to love this show as a child, and how much all those memories came back just for seeing the opening theme on youtube. Finally, after all these years, I saw the final episode last night on google video, and let me tell you, I don't remember crying so much since god knows what age! I'm not ashamed to admit this, Seeing David and his wife say goodbye to all the animals that lived in their home, the forest, and David's favorite companion Swift is guaranteed to make anyone who watched this show as a child, bawl completely.

I understand that a lot of you have complained about David and his wife "dying" at the end, because death is such a sensitive issue, and should not be brought up or metaphored in any way towards a small child. I remember watching Sesame Street when the character(and actor of)Mr Hooper died, and Maria revealed the hard truth about Death towards Big Bird, it was definitely a landmark moment, and one of the most unforgettable moments in T.V. history. I feel, that it is the responsibility of any parent, to bring the subject up and talk about it with their child when they feel they are ready, so they may understand and accept that Death is, after all, a part of life.

I look foward to this series coming to DVD someday(here in the U.S.), and wish that someone in Hollywood would make a movie on David the Gnome.

IAWTC!!!!! yes... well now at least i have a mental image to paste over the sad, sappy REAL ending.

reply

Normally I can stand up to a tearjerker without fail, but this one really got me.

reply

Actually, kids shows in other countries do not sugarcoat death and some children grow up seeing it every day. Children should know about the whole story of life, but at their level. Censoring them makes them unequipped to handle life.

reply

This episode was seriously sad.

Maybe I was just crazy. Or maybe I was just a girl... interrupted.

reply

The Mountains of Beyond definatly is a metaphor for heaven and they turn into trees because for their whole life to the world they are but small insignificant creatures, but because they are such an important part of the world the become something big and grand and majestic

If I had seen the show more in-dpth as a child I most likely would have cried more. But when I saw this one, after having only seen a couple of episodes as a child I cried less than I would've.

I'm 13, they played a few re-runs on some channel in the...90's, I think?

I was bawling when I first saw it, lol. I remember hearing somewhere that when the gnomes get old enough they just know when they're finished and they go to the mountains and just give up living. I'm not sure why those particular mountains, though. I think he said in one part that they were going where their ancestors went. Correct me if I'm wrong.

reply

This kind of reminds me of the ending of Lord of the Rings trilogy...when they all sail off to "the West". Another metaphor for Heaven and the afterlife, I think.

-Goodnight, father of two!

Here is passage from the book Gnomes by Poortuliet and Huygen, from which the show was based on, that explains it.

Even a gnome's life must come to an end. Over 400 years of age, the male rapidly becomes stiff and forgetful, though other gnomes still respect him. Eventually the shriveled-up old man developes a tendency to wander. His wife displays the same symptoms, she being almost the same age herself. The housekeeping begins to suffer; the house starts to decay and becomes dirty and dark.

On one particular night, the aged couple does not return from their wandering. They have begun the journey to the Mountain of Death (never before seen by human eyes)-and with the certainty of a migratory bird they will find it if they are not attacked on the way by animals of prey.

As soon as they die, their birthday tree begins to get dead branches unless it is used by more than one gnome. (See Timekeeping.)

Lives beyond 400 years or so have seldome been recorded, with the exception of a married couple in the Balkans who lived 550 years. But they were looked after for a great while by generations of a farming family, who placed a bowl of yogurt in the stable for them every day. They each had an olive tree on the Adriatic Sea.

I won't lie, I do get sad every time I think of this show. Yep, lil ol' jaded me.

I'm 25-years old, and when I was a little boy I was this big fan of this show.

Anyway, I was reading you guy's comments about David the Gnome dying........now I thought maybe I had seen that episode and I just didn’t that know he died because the writers were discreet about it.

Well, I found the episode on the web and watched it....and I have no memory at all of that episode. None. I remember a lot from my past, but that episode did not ring any bells. And I gotta say...that was one of the saddest freakin’ things in the world! It actually gave me chillbumps! I can’t imagine being a kid and watching that. It’s a terrible thing for a little kid to see!

I have no clue why I never saw it. As a child, I would have know what was going on because it’s pretty clear. I’m going to guess that Nick Jr. never aired that episode here in the States, or just during the era I watched it. I know there were only 26 episodes, so maybe Nick Jr. finally aired the episode years later because the show stayed on the air in reruns until 98’.

I also don’t believe the show originally aired on Nick, and I know networks do that sometimes with certain syndicated episodes that the network deems inappropriate for children, and if Nick Jr. did infact not air that episode...I can’t blame em’! You’re not suppose to kill off the main character! I realize it’s important for children to learn about life and death, but the main guy!? Come on now...:)

Does anyone think the images we see of David and Lisa inside the trees are they're spirits or are they just Swift's imagination? I personally think it's NOT they're spirits, and what we see in the trees is intended to merely just be pictures from the memory of Swift and we the audience.

I think David, Lisa and Casper died the way atheists believe people die where there is nothingness after death. Like being asleep, but without the dreams and you never wake up. Only instead of having their bodies remain on earth, their bodies have turned into trees, and trees cannot think, see, hear, touch, smell, taste, feel or speak. So they're pretty much dead, and there is no heaven for them. David and Lisa knew this too, which is why I believe they said good-bye to each other.

reply

Not true.
Trees are alive, they are completely DIFFERENT to animals, but if they wanted to picture it as atheistic, or even nihilistic, or as a metaphor for death- no, they would never have used trees.
Trees can't do the things you mentioned, but they`ve been ascribed on a lot of mystical powers in myths. So letting them become trees, is very mythical.
There might not be a heaven for them. Well, there are a lot of afterlife views, and only one of them is about a heaven. Others differ. Being reborn a tree, especially as a gnome, is definately no metaphor for dead. It`s another way of living on- one that`s no more or less possible than the christian one.

I`m not talking to myself- myself just won`t stop talking to I!

reply

wow, I haven't checked this thread in literally years. I'm glad to see there are so many fans of the show and that I'm not the only one who was affected by this episode. Thank you overtheedge27 for explaining the mythology about the death of gnomes, that cleared up a lot. I enjoyed reading all your opinions and views about this episode, especially the previous poster who wrote about trees having mystical powers and how the gnomes live on, interesting stuff.

reply

Don't know if you will see this comment as I am 6 years late but I just wanted to say I agree with your comment 100%. Very sad, but somehow, your idea seems right

reply

I know no one has replied to this thread in nearly four years (Jan. 10, 2013 as I type this) but I wanted to throw my two cents in.

I just watched the final episode this morning after buying the complete series on Amazon last week.

I'm 26 now and I grew up watching David the Gnome on Nick Jr. but never saw the last episode until just this morning. I never even learned how it ended until a few years ago.

I'll admit it--I did start crying while watching the last episode. But the fact I haven't exactly felt happy in recent times probably didn't help matters. But it was a sad episode though, I thought.

reply

I remember watching the last episode on tv, and looking at the dates of the show I would have been either 4 or 5... and I sobbed my little heart out. Did they go into trees? All I remember is these two gnomes had to go and it was so so sad. This was when great cartoons would be on saturday mornings from 6am, so I was by myself watching these gnomes leave (die), and all I can remember doing is cry hahaha... thats pretty much all I remember about the show at all! I've been trying to find out what this cartoon was for years, good ol' IMDB.. plu jem and the holograms brought me here!

reply

Far out I just read the dates of the previous posts... am I late to the party or what!
