So what did they actually want. Were they coming back for the grown-ups.....for food? If so, why not just eat the kids. Was there some other purpose?

Its left ambiguous. However, thats why i think its good. Any reason or motivation behind the creatures would lesson the terror they induce. There was no way to fight them, no way to communicate. And ultimately, no way the characters could have learned more about them - any explanation would have been contrived.

I didn't see a single attempt at fighting them off or communicating with them. I understand they may come at inopportune moments, but something like setting traps or having LIGHT SOURCES WHICH DON'T DEPEND ON FALLIBLE ELECTRICITY!!!
