Manchester is a great place, especially with it being the home of Man City.

Good Manchester films are The Parole Pfficer (great film!) and 24 Hour Party People is good as well.

I've never been to Manchester, and I have nothing against Manchester, but it was set there because that's Steve's hometown.

Manchester has had so many films made here that it's difficult to know where to start. Some have been good some bad and it's all a matter of opinion.

George Formby started his career with Boots, Boots made for Mancunian Films at what is now halls of residence for the Met University (became ABC studios in between).

A Taste of Honey although set in Salford had its opening in Manchester with many scenes from the city.

The White Bus with Arthur Lowe was filmed in Manchester with scenes at Central Station (G-Mex), and Cheetham College in Cheetham Hill.

Charley Bubbles with Albert Finney filmed scenes at the Piccadilly Hotel and Manchester United Football Club.

Barton United (I think) was a childrens Film Foundation Production which also featured MUFC.

The Lovers with Richard Beckinsale and Paula Wilcox was set in Manchester and featured St Anne's Square and Albert Square amongst its locations in the days when buses ran in both places (before pedestrinisation). Also featured locations in car park outside Piccadilly Hotel.

Reds with Warren Beatty used the Zionist Institute in Hulme or Moss Side as the setting for Leningrad or Stalingrad.

The remake of Alfie used Manchester locations and the city as doubled as New York and Chicago as well as London.

Sherlock holmes has used Manchester Town Hall Courtyards to double for London Streets but I must admit that I can't remember if this was TV or film.

Raining Stones was at Alkrington.

East is East was over the border at Irlams o t'height

Bill Liar was filmed in Greater Manchester and so was a kind of loving and love on the dole. Spring and Port wine too.

There were loads of others that I can't remember at this late hour but lets not get started on TV Movies or the list will be endless.

Cold Feet.

They actually used my school for it as well. I didn't know until I was watching it, and thought: "Wait a minute...I'm sure I've seen that statue before."

And this I know, his teeth as white as snow...

How can anyone say 24 hour party people is a good film, it is shocking

reply

L'Age D'Or and Tokyo Olympiad both used Mancheste with great subtlety.

Also the Odessa Steps sequence in "Snow White" was based on an early sexual experience of a Disney animator.

And so it goes.

You miss the point -but only completely.

Manchester not as good as Leeds ?
Your entry for the daftest comment of the year competition.

Bit like saying Saffron Walden is more significant in the history of culture than Rome.

Your comments- apart from their absurdity- are self-contradictory.

You ramble on about Manchester-not the film- whereas I linked the city to its cinematographic signicance to Bunuel, Kurosawa and Eisenstein, as well as its almost human backcloth to "The Parole Officer"- and the leading role played by Steve Coogan in the film of the historic Hacienda Club in Manchester and its place in the development of modern club culture.

And finally your summing up- bathos or what- "F...ing ancient rome"- wash your child like partly formed mouth-summon up your few remaining partly functioning brain cells-face the divine Federico Fellini- and apologise.

This is a film site.

Write about films.

The television series "Shameless" is set in Manchester, only the first 3 series are worth watching, after that the original writer left and C4 wanted to milk the show for all it was worth and instead of location shooting on Manchester they moved to a horrible studio.

"Early Doors" and "The Royle Family" are definitely worth a watch, great depiction of how the working class in Manchester live.

24 Hour Party People is a classic.

Men are guilty of all the good they do not do.
