Why didn't they just destroy the tape?? Artistic license?

Only the corrupt police officers would have wanted the tape destroyed, and they only got their hands on it at the end of the movie - or at least the fake tape.

I think that's the OP's point. Why didn't the police officers just destroy the tape instead of going to the trouble of putting it in a safety deposit box?

The owner of the club was the one who put it in the safety deposit box...presumably as insurance against the dirty cops he was involved with. The cops could've been under the impression that he destroyed the tape.

The tape was not destroyed because it was a crud film.

The police didnt hide it the owner did, as an insurance against the police. As soon as the copper got it he wanted it destroyed. You may need to work on your plot hole finding skills
