I must have missed something... what was the significance of the trip wire that the bosnian chap finds early in the film, at one end of the trench? I was expecting it to be a feature in a later scene but in the end it came to nothing.

What did I miss?

it meant there were mines that way so he could not get out of the trench in that direction
