Many people preferred "No Man's Land" to "Amelie." I certainly did.

It's the academy they always *beep* things up. Just like they did with No Man's Land.

I pity you, for those do not love Amélie Poulain. It is by far the best movie of 2001, & one of all time foreign movies ever!

I think No Man's Land is, even though a simple move, simply too much to understand for you...

reply

i think both of them are equally great movies,
but i suppose the concept of "no mans land" appeals to more audiences than the concept of "amelie" - plus no mans land is one of the rare movies which depicts the yugoslavian war (;_; which i think is a shame for a war that killed nearly 1.2 million people during WWII, and millions of others during the genocide in the early 90s... it's like rwanda or darfur or any other place where the atrocities are silenced) - thus the reason why it won.

i would also like to say, just as a sidenote, the oscars has been pretty biased in the past.

reply

i would just like to point out that it's not accurate to say that this is one of the rare movie depicting the yugoslavian wars - in fact practically 99 % of both Croatian and Bosnian film since the wars have been about that very topic. It's just that they aren't as good :) And of course far too subjective due to the sensitivity of the subject :) And while Amelie remains an exceptional piece of filmmaking, this was a far more important film and much more difficult to make.

No Man's Land is way better than Amelie.

Amelie is overrated as blue hell.

Oh baby, baby it's a wild world

If anyone decides to open voting about this subject, you have my vote, I completely agree with you.

I think Amelie is an excellent film, well deserving of many of the awards that it received. But in my opinion I am glad that this film one the Academy Award, mainly because I prefer this film over Amelie. That is not to say that Amelie didn't deserve said award. Its just like I said I prefer this over the two films.

Amelie makes people happy; No Man's Land makes people sad. "Sad" equals better in some people's minds.

I think Amelie is a better movie, but only by a hair. Anyway you can't find two movies more different from each other than Amelie and No Man's Land. Amelie is lively, warm hearted and romantic while No Man's Land is dark and depressing and with an anti-war message behind it. Both have humor but one is of the dark kind while the other is much more innocent. Both are great films. I can't be too mad NML won.
