Confused about 'The Doorbell Rang'

I just started watching the series on DVD, and this is first episode (I think). I like the great production values and the very good acting. I've never read any Nero Wolfe stories.

SPOILERS BELOW.

I must confess I don't get the plot. So the secretary murdered the guy who was a writer working on an FBI story. OK, fine.

But how do the plot elements tie together? Is it pure coincidence that the secretary worked for the rich woman who was being harassed by the FBI? That's a heck of a coincidence. Was she being harassed BECAUSE of the secretary? And what is the significance of the subplot about someone who used to work for the rich woman but who went to prison? Do these tie together in some coherent way?

Yes, it does rely on coincidence (The FBI finding the body soon after the murder) but if you watch the episode again, you may see how everything ties together in a somewhat coherent way.

Btw, no, the rich woman wasn't being watched because of her secretary.

The next two movie length episodes in the series have a more simple plot, in case you were wondering.
