Originaly supposed to be X-Men spin-off?

Was Mutant X suppsed to be set in X-Men universe before 20th century fox filed their law suit? I remember English tv heavily implying that it was connected to the X-Men franchise but when the show started it was clear that it wasn't.Did the law suit force the makers of the show to make drastic script changes?

Fox has the TV and movie rights to X-Men. If they did not give the okay on this, then it was obvious they did not want it to be part of their universe.
