...but the movie is the reason I decided to read it. I think it's a great adaptation, but I am a little disappointed that it's rated PG-13. The book was easily an R. The movie could have been so much more epic, so much more raw and honest about the foster care system and the lives of all of these people in LA.
Yea, like when she got attacked by the dog. Or how Star went to the hospital after she shot her. Its been a while since I read the book, but I believe that Astrid started sleeping with the Russian lady's boyfriend. And that one terrible foster home she lived in, where she basically was a prostitute for marijuana. Rough, but great book. Ingrid was also more evil in the book, but she wasnt given a huge role in the movie.
shareThe part that got me was when she lived in Amelia Ramos' house and she was practically starving to death. She had to resort to eating out of the trash just to stay alive. That really broke my heart. I was so happy when she was able to get out of there fairly quickly and found true love with Claire. I hated that she wasn't strong enough to stay for Astrid if not for herself.

I guess I'm going to have to reread the book. I remember feeling profoundly moved by the book, but I'd forgotten how rough it was. I thought it was mainly like the movie aside from some bits being altered or removed. I do remember there were one or two foster homes not even mentioned in the movie, and didn't she have a call-girl (high class hooker) friend who was a neighbor that she looked up to?

Seriously if you haven't read the book but have seen this film, then do so immediately. Its one of my favourite books and have read it 5 times now. The film seriously does not do it justice.
Just finished the book fourteen years after having seen the movie. It's good and disturbing to the core.
