Communications goof....


The distance from Earth to Mars varies, but given an average of 80 million miles, it takes radio waves 7 minutes in each direction (they travel at 186,000 mi/sec). Thus it would be a 14 minute delay to hear a reply to a transmission in either direction. Did you notice that afterr the crash the crew communicated two-way with Earth with no delays? By comparision, a radio wave can circle earth 8 times in one second.

Yeah thats right. I was thinking the same thing that mountainman referred but then I realized that they were actually talking to the guy on the orbit.

You are correct, the obvious communications flaw is when the newscaster speaks directly with the captain of the expedition in the beginning of the movie.

The newscast could have been pre-recorded with the time delay edited out. (as in 2001)
