Question about the beginning of the movie

I came in right at the beginning of "Stranded" but missed maybe 30-50 seconds of the beginning credits etc. And the movie itself was so enervating that I had trouble paying strict attention to the plot developments.

I can't stand the idea of watching the film again, so I want to ask...

Did the screenplay explain WHY the lander crashed in the first place? Was it pilot error or mechanical/electronic failure ? Was there some kind of gravitational or magnetic anomaly that threw off the landing or CAUSED the systems failure? And if there was, was it related to the 'anomalies' that the exploratory party found near the end of the film?

It would be kind of funny if a rescue mission fell prey to the same unexpected environmental conditions that caused the first ship to crash, wouldn't it? THe rescue missions would keep disappearing without a trace, and no one could warn the follow up missions about the ship-killing conditions awaited them.

You could set up endless sequels: "Son of 'Stranded'", "Return to the Valley of 'Stranded'", "Stranded 4: The Martian's Revenge", etc.

Thanks to anyone out there who can settle this minor point for me.

There was no pilot error that caused the spaceship to crash. It was a systems failure probably caused by the magnetic anomaly referred to later on in the movie. At least that is what the astronauts assume when they find the tunnels. A rescue mission might not crash if they landed in another spot. Anyway, the open ending leaves room for your own thoughts about what might happen to the stranded astronauts.

Thank you kindly, that's what I thought.

It was said in the movie that it was because of the strange magnetic fields or whatever they called it...

Presumably Ground Control will study the telemetry tapes and add more magnetic shielding on the next lander.

think yourself lucky you missed the opening credits, it gave me a headache, 5 mins for opening credits is too long for any movie.

How about 7 minutes and 42 seconds!!!!?? :)
