Pyramid Head: Underrated (spoilers)

He's the crucial element that the other Silent Hill games are missing. His mysterious, domineering presence alone is incredibly eerie and intimidating. The game brilliantly introduces him (if I remember correctly) behind a barred hallway, just standing there, and the designers also brilliantly didn't allow for you to kill him. There are several different philosophies over who or what he's supposed to represent. I personally think he's supposed to represent James himself, since you constantly see him killing Maria or raping the other monsters, most of which I believe to represent sick or dead Mary. I really wish the other SH games had a monster or character like him. Walter from SH4 was pretty creepy and menacing as well, but in a different and more annoying way (there were too many annoying monsters in that game in general). I haven't played any game after SH4. If the latter games do have such a character, please let me know.

I know right? He scared the living hell out of me especially when he was just standing there behind the bars, looking right at you...the first time I played I was like WTF? He is creepy though and deserves more praise than he currently gets. He also scared em cuz when he was chasing em down that long hallway with Maria, he literally went right past Maria and only came after me so it was scary!!! I don't know how it happened but Maria was behind Pyramid Head and PH was coming after me!! /= He is awesome though!

As for the different things he does like killing Maria a bunch of times and raping those monsters....wow. Still, I never heard anyone put out a theory that the raped monsters were representing Mary...I always assumed its just James and a bit of sexual frustration from not having Mary anymore...

I hope PH is in the second Silent Hill movie...

WHY SO SERIOUS?

reply

Yeah, me too. I was so happy that he was in the first one. I thought the movie was very good for a video game adaption, the best I've seen of such thus far, but even if it sucked, I still would've enjoyed seeing the return of Pyramid Head.

It would be rather pointless to have PH in another game beyond Silent Hill 2... that is unless James is in it. PH, just like all the other monsters in the game, is mean to represent the internal struggle that James has dealing with the repressed memory of killing his wife and (more specifically) the sexual frustration he endured while Mary was sick. To have PH in another silent hill (such as the god awful silent hill homecoming) is meaningless as it goes against the lore of the silent hill universe. It would be just as effective and make about as much sense to put mario or link in a james-less silent hill as it would PH.

You're right, and I don't think Pyramid Head himself should be in another Silent Hill game. I just think another equally menacing and untouchable character should be in the other games. The other Silent Hill games that I've played (3 and 4) have bosses, but none of them have a disturbing and mysterious character that follows the main character around but is never killed off (other than Walter Sullivan, which I mentioned). Yeah, if Pyramid Head kept reappearing in the games, not only would it be pointless for the reasons you mentioned, but it would also turn him into a generic character that would no longer be frightening or interesting. He didn't really serve much of a purpose in the movie, other than killing off a minor character, but I'm still glad he made an appearance. I'm wondering how closely the Silent Hill 2 movie will follow the game, since Pyramid Head and several other monsters from Silent Hill 2 were included in the first film.

I don't remember Valtiel in SH3. Who or what was he?

Ah, okay, I was wondering who that dude was suppose to be.

His objective is to basically watch over Heather, which is why you never see him attack her.

I get it up, I get it up in the dark, I make her feel I'm not a holy man

Spoilers ahead!

Although I haven't played it, Silent Hill Origins supposedly has a character that is exactly like Pyramid Head. I believe his name is "The Butcher" who is also meant to act as the main characters conscious or something but I'm not too sure.

The characters, creatures, and storyline is that makes this the best game of the series. This is actually the first SH game I played as I played it before I got Silent Hill. Silent Hill 3 is OK and it has connections to the first game but I don't get most of the monsters. SH2, every creature is connected with James:

Lying Figure-Supposed to represent James' internal struggle over what he had done as well as his sexual frustration.

Mannequin-This one is pretty obvious considering we first encounter it when we see a mannequin wearing Mary's clothes.

Nurse-Also obvious.

Abstract Daddy-This one is the only one that is somewhat ambiguous because we first encounter it when we hear Angela yelling for her father to stop. We can speculate that Angela does indeed see her father in this creature and what James sees is a manifestation of his suffocation of Mary.

Flesh Lips-Again could be construed like abstract daddy.

Pyramid Head-Is seen as both James and James' punisher.

Maria/Mary-duh.

Pyramid Head is in no way underrated. At least, I think. He gets the most attention out of all of the Silent Hill characters/creatures. Wanna know who is really scary? Walter Sullivan.

"Haha... Optimus Prime."

Pyramid Head actually is in Silent Hill Homecoming as well
