Maria trick

I've heard there's a way you can get Maria to follow you for the entire game by skipping the hospital and going to the historical society after meeting Maria at the park? This sounds impossible seeing how the keys to the historical society probably won't appear until completing the hospital but if anyone has done this trick please let me know
