Mulholland Drive

Blue Velvet

Lost Highway

Anyone of Lynch's films, really.

reply

Well not any Lynch film is like that, but Silent Hill 2 did seem similar to Lynch style quite a few times. Blue Velvet is not so similar even if Silent Hill 2 features a nod to that movie.

I thought it was, Jeffery always reminds me of James. Jeffery has this dark side, that is always underneath and James strikes me as that.

Lynch is a good source to go to, especially his brilliant TV show Twin Peaks, which is basically about an f'ed up town.
Don't Look Now is a really good film that reminds me of Silent Hill 1 and 2.

Alot of Lynch's and Cronenberg's works

Freaky monsters and violence with a strong sexual subtext

Though Silent Hill references the hell out of Blue Velvet, the hotel seems to have bits of Eraserhead in there as well

reply

I have actually never seen Eraserhead, but I plan too because I have an inexplicable love for David Lynch movies.

Session 9

Oh! Yes, that one as well. Never had the balls to watch it though. Same for Jacob's Ladder.

I am a huge SilentHill-Head and I just watched Session 9 for the first time last week. It was aweseome. Jacob's Ladder is also amazing. The theories present in Jacob's Ladder (Tibetan Book of the Dead) are expounded upon by Indigo_Hybrid in another thread here. He does a good job of connecting the ideas. I am inclined to agree with his theory save a few holes.

Atmosphere wise you might want to check out Suspiria and The Beyond.

The Mothman Prophecies.

Jacob's Ladder and Session 9 are amazing, and the most SH-ish in feel, but if you want plot-like, go for The Mist. It's based on a Stephen King book that helped inspire Silent Hill, and though I'm sure the book is better (i haven't read it) I really enjoyed the movie. :) Very sociological and depressing though. It's all about human nature, with some monsters thrown in of course. ^_-

Tarkofsky's Solaris had an interesting similarity to this. Its a sci fi but the protagonist is visited by a woman, who looks identical to his dead wife. She dresses more sexily and is enigmatic.

Very similar to SH2 in particular.

reply

Ooh... good call.

I agree with Solaris as a good film to base Silent Hill 2 on.

Aside from the errieness of the game settings, the monsters like Pyramid head and the oddball characters you meet, I was most impressed by the emotional anguish you may feel playing Silent Hill 2. It really is a very sad story and the haunting quality lingered with me for a long time after I had completed it.

Careful what you say to me. I will argue with you forever. I enjoy trying to prolong arguments :D

Hellraiser Inferno definitely had some Silent Hill 2 similarities with the protagonist being psychologically tortured.

Someone mentioned Mothman Prophecies and it does have some slight similarities to Silent Hill 2. The main characters wife dies tragically, and his wife is even named Mary. The main character ends up going to a strange town where odd things are happening. And the movie kind of has a weird creepiness to it. But that's about where the similarities end, I'd say.

But hands down, Jacob's Ladder is the most Silent Hill-type movie there is (besides the actual Silent Hill movies). The (original) developers even admitted Jacob's Ladder was the single biggest influence on the games.

You remind me of a white crayon... totally useless.
