...and destroy every copy of the abomination that is The Lake House. With proper planning and even on a shoestring budget, we can do it. Heck, Siworae was made for $1,900,000.00 USD, which amounts to about a tenth of Keanu's paycheck for the Hollywood facelift/breast augmentation treatment.

That being said, I think it's high time someone mentioned that in the film, Sung-Hyun's estranged father's love stands as the root of his son's salvation.

The house that he built for his son ends up being the vehicle for Sung-Hyun's finding true love and loss and sacrifice on his own journey into manhood.

While it is overshadowed by the romance between the two main characters, it is in fact the linchpin holding the entire film together. It's a subtle commentary on how love really does transcend time and distance.

Here here, I'm with you on this one.

Hollywood should really stop making crappy remakes of great Japanese/Korean movies.

Siworae beats the crap out of The Lake House, hands down. Anybody who says otherwise probably 1) haven't seen Siworae, or 2) is a White American.

Thank you.

reply

I totally agree! Hollywood should stop stealing almost original storylines from Korea/Japan when they're just going to make a worse off remake.

Remakes are attempts of BETTER films. Americans cannot make remakes at all.

Mostly Hollywood steals plots from French movies and British tv series.

The Lake House is not a good remake of Il Mare.
The great Jun Ji-Hyun makes Sandra Bullock look like an ordinary actress.

reply

Jun Ji-Hyun is such a powerful actress that she makes you care for her characters. Sandra Bullock is simply a likable actress with bright personality on screen.

I'm neither white nor American and I saw both and I absolutely love "The Lake House", so much more than "Il Mare". Maybe you should accuse the Korean producers of "Il Mare" for being traitors for accepting Hollywood money. If there's anyone to blame, it is those who accepted the money.

reply

I'm not white yet I consider both versions fairly equal.

And the actresses are pretty equal too. Like Jun Ji Hyun, Bullock always had a pretty engaging personality. Both are better in stories that bring out their eccentric qualities. Both versions of this film are too listless to do that.

Though I have to disagree with #2 as you're just lumping White American's together, it's funny you should say that, check out a post from The Lake House thread:

"I think one must be Asian to like that one better.

I have watched it a couple of times and find it very caleiodoscopic and somewhat hard to follow."

If I had not seen Lake House I would not have learned about Siworae. I requested it from the Denver Library. I got to see it last night. It was all and more of what I could have hoped for. Lake House was trash. (I can happily rip that one apart for you.) While I did not like the Lake House, I did love the premise of the story so much that I was interested in the screenplay. Which led me to find out about Siworae on Imdb. It is released here in the US as Il Mare. Now I want to know about the musical score.

it really makes me mad when i hear about remakes. i try not to watch any remake unless i have seen the original. still then, i would not bother to watch them anyway.

i would just like to address the part about the father's love.

if i recall it right, in the architecture book HIS name for the house was "the son's house", which sould cast some light on its importance; also, the girl mentions that it all comes from the warmth that the house's core exhudates.

also notice that, prior to his illness, the father goes to the house and seems to be about to leave a message for his son in the mailbox. i wonder where did that mailbox come from. (maybe from the same ACME wharehouse which provided the magic box that made tom hanks BIG?)

by the way, anyone knows which house is that? great architecture!

The house as linchpin? Dude, i thought it was Cola, the dog.

I've seen The Lake House first not knowing it was a remake. I thought that the plot was too good to be from Hollywood. I just finished watching Il Mare and it is hands down superior. Il Mare is artistic, deep and subtle, like all great korean dramas. Some people not used to this type of cinematography would prefer the remake, but that's their loss.

reply

I agree but I didn't think the remake was that bad. It got me (and others) interested enough to want to watch the original film which is a plus. I also think the cinematography was really gorgeous.

reply

I agree the remake wasn't that bad. But the original is clearly superior in almost every way.
