Korean movie recommendations

I just saw this movie and loved it. I would really like to watch more korean movies of this quality. Particularly ones with unexpected or tragic endings. Any recommendations on what some other must-see korean movies?

reply

I would recommend the following five movies, all Korean.

1."The Classic": a most beautiful and tragic romance crossing two generations. One of the best Korean films of all time.

2."A Moment to Remember": A poignant drama depicting a wonderous romance between a rich man's beautiful daughter and a carpenter. A tragedy awaits them.

3."Lover's Concerto": A story of friendship and love between a young man and two maidens. What is the secret of these two inseparable pretty girls?

4."My Sassy Girl": An unlikely romance between a naive young man and a most unusual girl. One of the top-grossing films in Korea and abroad. Recently voted the best Korean film of all time by international viewers.

5."A Tale of Two Sisters": Actually a horror movie rather than a drama. I usually don't care for horror movies but this movie is an exception because it is such a beautiful film.

The first three movies star beautiful Son Ye-jin, and "My Sassy Girl" stars Jon Ji-hyeon of "Il Mare." You will not be disappointed.

Highly recommending the following Korean movie :-
"Dogma #7 Interview" - acted by Lee Jung Jae (leading actor in "Siworae"),and Shim Eun Ha (leading actress in "December in August")
A story of a filmmaker(Eun-sok),who falls in love with the woman(Young-hee)he interviews for his documentary film about ordinary young lovers. The crew came across different young lovers from all walks of life. One of them is Young-hee, who claims herself as a trainee at a hair salon. She starts to recount a romance between her and a soldier whom she is still waiting for. While Eun-sok is being attracted by her story, the interviews presents the evolution of a relationship which shifts from the objective to the subjective, from lies to truth. Eun-sok gradually discovers his feelings for Young-hee)...

"Siworae" and "Dogma#7 Interview" are two of the best Korean romance on my list.

Nobody mentioned Oasis (2002):

Well, it doesn't have a tragic ending as far I remember, but it might be shocking for some people.

"Art Museum by the Zoo"

A surprisingly entertaining romantic comedy. A wedding photographer meets a soldier on leave under rather unusual circumstances. The two leads are simply delightful. The female lead is played by Shim Eun-ha, a lovely and enigmatic actress who abruptly decided to retire while on top of the popularity.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned "Brotherhood of War". I have a very high opinion of Korean cinematography, and, IMHO, this movie is one the best they made.
