Anyone have any idea why this movie got (apparently) screwed?

I recently showed this movie to a friend of mine, and we decided that as romantic comedies go, this is certainly one of the best. And yet, I didn't even hear about it until a couple years ago when I randomly saw it on a cable movie channel. I never saw a trailer or saw any advertising press for it whatsoever when it was released. The movie was given an 'R' rating for apparently no other reason than seeing Monica's naked back from a room's length away, and Boreanaz dropping the 'F-bomb'. This should have been PG-13 easy.
It seems like someone at the studio or the MPAA wanted this one dead before it could fly. This movie is head and shoulders above most of the Bullock/Witherspoon/Hudson buckets of formulaic crap that tend to dominate the genre, and if enough people had got to see it, I think it could have been a real winner for the studio. Did they deem it to not have a 'bankable' enough star? Anyone have any idea(s) of what happened?

I had the same reaction after stumbling across the film one Sunday aftertoon on Lifetime. I'll admitt that I was very skeptical with the initial scenes of being dumped by the jerk set up, but felt extremely rewarded for sticking with it. Anyway, I did a bit of online digging and found a few souces of information.

Premiering in August 2002 as part of France's Deauville Festival of American Cinema, I'm With Lucy made its domestic debut in November at the AFI Film Festival and quickly disappeared, generating a mere $15 million at the box office. One wonders, with such a star laden cast, how the film so quickly made its way to home video?

And an interesting discussion on:

That includes remarks from the Director:

"It breaks my heart that Sony didn't put it out in theaters. It's a long story whu but we got screwed. Thanks again for being so kind."

Well after years of searching (unsuccessfully) to find it on TV, DVD or torrents, just when I had almost lost all hope, I spotted it on a random visit to a music store on the £5 shelf. How happy I am to have it! :)

I saw it on a cable channel late at night too! I think it was WE (Women's Entertainment).

Seriously... STUPID movies have had wide releases and WTF kind of red tape stopped this one?!

Hollywood apparently has a thing against movies that break from the original formula.

It's a shame this was not one of those films.

It's PG in the UK. That pretty much proves how retarded the MPAA are lol
