The beginning is amazing but it gets worse at the middle part and end...

Well, the beginning is amazing and creepy, great story, love the cinematography and the actors are good too.
But then it gets more and more stupid (sadly) especially the part where the police men shoot around like idiots in the police station.

Also, why did they not have a flashback (150 years back)of Matilda Dixon when she was young?

The puppet of the tooth fairy in the showdown is very disappointing, it looks fake and bad, this was done by the one and only Stan Winston? Can't believe it.

This movie could have been so much more!

I really like this movie too; especially the awesome sound mix

Late reply, but I wanted to say it's great to see someone else noticed how fantastic the audio was. The sound effects were superb and her voice was quite creepy. I've seen other movies that tried to emulate this one in that regard and they consistently failed. That was honestly the best part of the movie.

I liked how it started too and yes, was disappointed in how it progressed.

When the hospital staff was being sacrificed, that was when I gave up on it. I really don't recall the ending.

Oh is that why people don't like this movie-the idiotic townspeople. Well I agree. I want to punch them all in the face too, but considering Matilda kills all the annoying people-I was fine with that result.

I agree. A flashback would have been better than the beginning we got. Sure it was spooky storytelling, but the flashbacks we got in the book and comic of Matilda when she was alive were a lot more interested and fulfilling than the beginning of that movie. It was crap compared to the real story.
She was always young she died when she was young. I still don't understand why they turned her into an old lady for the movie.

My thing with special effects is that they all look fake to me. I am very aware that it is fake. That's why I don't even pay attention to that type of stuff in horror films. It always looks fake to me, even if it's best horror movie effects around- I know it's not real.
What I depend on to scare me is the atmosphere and the storyline and the villain-all were terrific. I just wish they told Matilda's story form the book/comic instead of this half assed attempt we got in the movie.

I'm a Timelord.
Right, not pompous at all then.
