they're so stupid!

honestly you americans, phew, man, you guys are something else, who in they're right mind could be that stupid, you guys are saying stuff like congrats canada for legalizing VCRs, like holy sh*t member the good old days when americans used to make fun of canadians for saying "eh" all the time (which we don't) well, things have changed oh man have they changed...idiots

reply

And you're as stupid as the Americans in this show. Sure this show is hilarios and I laugh my ass off when ever i watch it, but the fact is, if all Americans were as stupid as this, there would be alot more shows like this. The reason there isn't is because probably after interviewing hundreds of different people in the States, they'll use only the 2% of people that were actually completely ignorant about Canada. And the parts when the Americans would say something like "Congrads Canada on legalizing VCR's" is jst for show. If An American reporter came up in Canada to interview us and told you to say something like "Congrads America on finally having coloured photography" and told you it would be on a comedy show that is aired nationally in America, you would probably do it, why not? So instead of calling our neighbors to the south a bunch of idiots, you should think about what you say before you actually say it, idiot.

I doubt they staged it..."you'll be featured on a comedy show, broadcasted nationally, oh and you'll come off as a total idiot." I mean they had politicians pleading Canada to use the 24 hour clock. I doubt that the politicians would be excited by the prospect of looking like a moron on national television. But it seems to be working for George W. so who knows?!

I wouldn't say they're idiots, just ignorant. But I wouldn't say that Canadians would be as ignorant, especially because, after "Talking to Americans" aired, The US tried to do "Talking to Canadians" but it was never completed.

reply

How could you possibly say somthing like that? I find the show hilarious too, but it's not becuase all americans are idiots! All americans are NOT idiots! Think Harvard and Yale...They just pick the answers that are funny. I'm Canadian, and I say 'eh', and you are the idiot here. The idiot thats making all of us look bad. Look at some of the cracks that are made about Canada...alot of them are true! So why don't you just keep your stupid ass opinions to yourself if you can't deliver them in a polite manner, EH?

The most famous segment, aired in 2000, featured Mercer asking then-presidential candidate George W. Bush – who had previously stated that "you can't stump me on world leaders" – for his reaction to an endorsement by Canadian Prime Minister "Jean Poutine", as well as to report the "traditional visit to the US" of the "King of Canada", Lucien Bonhomme.

Bush said he looked forward to working together with his future counterpart to the north, praised his support of free trade, and looked forward to the King's visit. That said, Bush never actually used the name of Poutine and only failed to correct Mercer on the name. A few years later when Bush made his first official visit to Canada, he said during a speech, "There's a prominent citizen who endorsed me in the 2000 election, and I wanted a chance to finally thank him for that endorsement. I was hoping to meet Jean Poutine."

Canada hasn't done anything important in the past decade? Holy sh*t i need to hurt something. if by important you mean blowing up other countries for oil or killing millions of innocent people failing to help other countries in need, then no Canada hasn't done anything like that, now have we? Just because we didn't invent the coolest stuff in the world or have two big towers blown up (and then have it blown out of proportion by the media because by the time the press had been aired twice that many people somewhere else in the world died of starvation and now a certain country with a certain war-mongering president are now probably shooting those who lived) doesn't mean that we haven't done anything important. We don't do one big important thing, wait for the shock value to wear off and do another thing, we do a lot of important things to help everyone around the world everyday. So, dax 20798, why don't you just go back to killing a bunch of people, being totally ignorant and prejudiced, becoming serverely obese and hogging all your money and resources? Don't make me come up on that pedestal you seem to have put yourself on.

Against an army, you would have a hope of survival. Against me, you have none.

This is a perfect example of why Mercer finds targets so easily. It's not so much that Americans are ignorant when it comes to Canada, it's the fact that are so PROUD of showing their ignorance! And when they realize they are wrong, thy just delete it and pretend it never happened. Like Viet Nam.

You don't hate all Americans, do you? :(

Some Americans are smart, some, not so much. A lot of them are VERY oblivious to everything around them including their neighbouring country.

I was in Florida at Disney World. My family was in line for a ride and we were talking about the pool in our backyard. Some locals from Florida over heard us and could NOT believe we had a pool in our backyard because it was ALWAYS freezing in Canada. My mom simply said, “Actually we just chip off the ice and go for a quick dip.” They believed us.

While in Disney, my brother needed to go to the hospital (When he was putting on his 3-D glasses for a ride, somehow he lodged it in his ear. Haha. Whatever he was like 10). On out hospital bill where you are to write in the country name, the DOCTOR put Toronto and in the spot for city he put Canada. My mom asked the nurses about his mistake and they had no idea Toronto was a city. I really hope they were joking, but something tells me they were not.

Lol, I was watching "Who want's to be a Millionaire" a few weeks ago and the question was "What is Canada's National Sport?", it was for like 250 000 or something! Guess "Millionaire" has caught on to America's ignorance. Anyways, when the woman was debating Lacrosse she said: "Lacrosse is outside I think, so I don't think it could be that, because I'm pretty sure that Canadian's can't go outside, it's too cold, right?"

reply

Well, as one of the supposed targets of the show I have to tell you it just makes me chuckle. It's not me up on the screen so why should I feel stupid? And I have to say I think any Canadians who let themselves get all wound up and vehement over the exercise aren't really appreciating the spirit of the jibe. I heard a radio interview with Rick Mercer and he said what flabbergasted him was not that people were ignorant of Canadian geography etc. but that they they were so willing to discuss at length a topic they knew nothing about... which many of the interviewees freely admitted when they say things like "Oh... this is the first I've heard about that." The word Mercer used to explain why these people were willing to talk to him anyway was "generous". He spoke with a fondness for his targets and came off more as the wacky uncle who "got yer nose" than some mean spirited jerk. And please don't tell me this was a sop to the Americans because it was an interview for Canadian radio which I found over the internet. Actually..... http://radio.cbc.ca/programs/thismorning/sites/a&e/mercer_010330.html

So, basically, good on you to the Canadians who enjoyed it as "all in good fun" but to anyone who intends to cite the show in your next sociology paper at the University of Toronto... well, I don't think your professor will accept the show as a rigorous research study. Some of the Americans are definitely being fooled, some of them are probably trying to keep a straight face as they play along, but I imagine all of them are just plain thrilled at the idea of being on Canadian TV.

I'd have to agree with I Watch Movies. I don't know nearly enough about Greenland....oh and the reason I know so much aobut the states is because your tv is shoved down our throat 24/7..you really know how to make entertaining television.....that's at least worth something....isnt it?
