Is it true the IRS debt was mainly from money Joe donated to the U.S. Government? Born Joseph Louis Barrow (May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981) I can find little more than passing mention of this. I watched the HBO documentary. The IRS story is true. I'm not sure Joe Louis had the best advisors. He liked to spend money as fast as he got it. Just like some athletes today. His son is interviewed and he was very frank about his father's poor decision making and absentee parenting. It was a sad story. He turned to drugs and alcohol and died broke.
