Why did he cry?

I'm thinking about the scene where Niels is proposing to Stina, the servant. He is crying so hard there - but why?

Is he drunk in that scene? (Can't quite remember)
Or is it because he wants his America-money?
Or... real emotions? (Somehow I don't believe that)

What do you think??

reply

he was desperate. he lost everything and marrying Stina was the last thing he wanted to do. I almost felt sorry for him...

he who rides a pony must someday fall

reply

I thought that He didn't want to marry Stina but Dina forced him to propose to Stina..... And he felt so shamful about Stina's refusal.....

** I don't understand Why Neils accepted that Dina took his American money?

reply

There wasn't anything else for him to do - if he had acted on it, everyone would have known, that he had been cheating in his business. The money officially didn't exist, so he couldn't claim it. If he wasn't so afraid of Dina, he could have done something to her, but I think fear is the reason why he didn't. That's my interpretation.

Fantastic movie!

It's been very long since I saw the movie..but I seem to remember that in the book Dina tells Niels that if he doesnt propose to Stina she will let everyone know what he's done. (Putting aside money)

AND she forced him to leave the place if he didnt marry her. He even got her pregnant by rape, and in old days you had to be married before even thinking about getting children. He knew his only option was to marry her since he had nowhere to go. Dina had the power since she owned the place. I love that movie. And it's even filmed at the place where i grew up! :D

Really? I think the places this movie was set in was extraordinary. Norway truly is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. One day I'll travel to "fjordarna". Just too bad everything in Norway is so expensiv!

I have to return some videotapes.

So where do you live then? I guess Norway is a bit expensive. I think it's a beautiful country too, but i would love to see the rest of the world. I am very fond of nature and i am very thankful that I am Dina got Norwegian nature on the screen, because some of us here in norway don't get to see all of it. But Kjerringøya is a place i still go to, but only in the summer now.

I live in Sweden, and although it's quite expensive here too, Norway is even worse.
I'm very fond of nature too, especially completely unexploited landscapes. My list on places where I want to (and will) travel to is Iceland, Norway, Canada, Scotland and New Zeeland. Haven't gotten that far on the list though, I'm travelling to Scotland on Saturday and that's about it... :)
Next summer I'll probably plan a trip to Norway!

Oh, yeah. It's really expensive here! I think Scotland is a lot more beautiful. I've been too Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, Denmark, and England as Well as Scotland. I want to go to Iceland, USA, Japan, Hong Kong, China, Australia, Wales, Ireland, and Finland as well. But Norway is beautiful, not counting all the ugly new buildings, beggars, expense and of course ABB.
